One of my future career goals was always to be able to protect the innocent and less
fortunate. I decided early on that I wanted to put my technical skills to use to be able to track
down child predators and distributors of CP (child pornography). The article I read goes into the
sexual behaviors in the images that circle on the internet of the victims of child pornography.
This relates to the social sciences on the basis that this topic falls under the branch of
criminology, a branch of social science that focuses on understanding criminal behavior and the
societal responses to crime. The article in itself is a content analysis so it involves more specific
figures and data to determine if the contributors hypothesis is correct. In this case the hypothesis
was derived from older studies on the subject that contained data, based of this when researchers
did they’re own analysis they hypothesized that the outcome would be similar which is that most
victims would be female, around the age of 10-12, that most of the younger victims would be
male and prepubescent compared to their female counterparts, majority of the victims were going
to be white, most offender would be a lone white male around the age of 40, and that the
majority of these images would display outward aggression, humiliation or degradation of the
victim. The type of research method used in the article was mainly sampling and procedure, in
other words picking a small group from a big group to study and following a plan to collect
information from that small group. The types of data found in the article were broken down into
categories such as age, race, gender, and sexual behavior that was shown in the explicit images.

As I was reading and studying this article I reflected about how this could relate to the material
that we are learning in class, and the class being about cybersecurity and the intersection with
social science. My mind went to a branch of social science, criminology. Interestingly enough,
cybersecurity and criminology have a lot of intersection and specifically in the cybercrime
sector, many would assume that cybersecurity is solely about defending about threats but it can
also involve tracking and making ‘traps’ to be able to catch criminal and in this case it could be
used to capture predator and distributors of child pornography. The article intersects with
challenges faced by marginalized groups, as victims often come from vulnerable communities.
Understanding the demographics and experiences of these victims is crucial for providing
support services and addressing systemic inequalities. Understanding the sexual behavior in
these explicit images benefits society as whole because by understanding the content of these
images it aids in risk assessment efforts, with findings suggesting that factors such as the gender
and age of victims depicted in the material may indicate increased risk for direct victimization.
