Complete the Social Media Disorder scale. How did you score? What do you think about
the items in the scale? Why do you think that different patterns are found across the
world?

I am currently 22 years old, born in the year 2001, and this places me at the end of the millennial
generation and at the beginning of Generation Z. One of the things about people around my age
is that we practically grew up with social media, it became part of our daily lives and helped us
keep in touch with friends and family no matter the physical distance. But with the good comes
that bad and ugly as well, social media in recent years has become an ongoing issue for people of
my generation to the point where some of us are addicted to it and cannot live without it. After
taking the Social Media Disorder test my scale came out to be 4 out of 9. This places me on the
verge of almost being labeled as a “disordered social media user”. For the majority of the
questions I answered they seemed over exaggerated in the sense that when I read them to myself
I thought “No way some people have felt bad for not using social media”. But it’s true, some
people are genuinely addicted to social media to the point where it is a problem, while self
reflecting I myself have thought my social media usage was pretty bad but after reading those
questions it’s safe to say i’m better off than most. I feel like that score changes based of the
culture of the area that you live in, I grew up in the country where social media wasn’t really a
big thing, but I could imagine that living in someplace like Los Angeles social media is
important to people to fit in with people to the point where they become addicted.
