Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate
to each level of need.

I’ve noticed patterns in my own behavior while contemplating on how Maslow’s Hierarchy of
Needs relates to my digital life and my personal experiences being part of a generation that has
been surrounded by technology our whole life. In the following paragraphs I will break down
each level of needs and how it relates to my own personal experiences.

Physiological Needs: In the context of technology, something that I have noticed in my own
behavior is that I do rely on my cell phone a lot. Not only from a convenience perspective but
also because practically my whole life is on my phone from personal contacts with loved ones
and employers, and getting around the city. When I don’t have my phone, albeit it probably
should be a sign, I do sometimes get feelings of anxiety or frustration.

Safety Needs: I have a vivid memory of a time I was helping my step father do a car bidding
online for a car that he wanted to buy, but essentially what happened was that we received a
scam saying the “FBI” had started an investigation against my family. Essentially it was a scam
but at the time I felt a sense of vulnerability or insecurity until the issue was resolved.

Love and Belongingness Needs: Social media platforms provide me with opportunities for
connection and belonging. Making friends or gathering followers on platforms like Facebook or
Instagram contribute to a sense of social connection and community, so physical distance is no
longer an issue regardless of where I am. I can keep up with the lives of my relatives. Doing this
fulfills this need for interpersonal relationships in the digital world.

Esteem Needs: Digital experiences can significantly impact self-esteem. Positive feedback,
recognition, or validation received through social media or online communities can enhance
self-esteem. Conversely, cyberbullying or negative interactions online can undermine self-esteem
and self-worth.

Self-Actualization: While Maslow believed that self-actualization is a rare achievement, digital
platforms offer avenues for self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. Engaging in
activities such as blogging, content creation, or online learning can contribute to fulfilling this
higher-level need in the digital world

Joseph Flores 02/07/2024 Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to yourexperiences with technology.
