Journal Entry #12

Cyber technology impacts interactions between offenders and victims on the way the crimes are committed. Cyber technology gives us new crimes, sometimes the victim doesn’t know who the offender is, thus making it harder for law enforcement or detectives to find a suspect quickly. This can include things like fraud or identity theft. The victim may not know that the offender opened an account in their name and got money out on credit. Another way that cyber technology impacts our interactions are that things can now be traced, like text messages. If someone sends a threatening message then there is proof that, it happened. This can extend to bullying or harassment, screenshots of things can be kept and used against someone, this could hinder the offender to seek other options. The offender could use other methods where they cannot be traced. The victim or people just passing by could use their cameras to record anything send it around to other people or possibly use that against the person when they have their day in court. Another interaction between the offender and a victim is the interaction between the two in sex crimes. For example, revenge porn is an issue that involves some type of relationship that has ended and has ended in a bad way. This is caused by the other party being so upset over a breakup that they send their videos or pictures of that person to people, they can also make fun of them as well, this can turn into a form of harassment. Sex crimes over the internet have become common since people’s access to cyber technology. In cases of child pornography, the child may be too young to understand what is going on, hence that the victim in the case is present but doesn’t know what had happened is wrong until someone finds out about what had been happening, which is usually an adult.
