Engineers consider past attacks because that puts a spotlight on any vulnerabilities that exist. Although an attack similar to that may not happen because there will always be something that is unexpected, an attack is not expected. For example, if there is a security vulnerability in the system that is created, it takes engineers to come together and create a solution to help prevent that from happening again. Engineers can also do a risk assessment, which details what the possible vulnerabilities are in that system. Once the vulnerabilities are identified, then they can be corrected before the system is out in the “public”. Engineers also create new systems; these systems are better than the previous ones. The new systems are safer because they can respond to new threats or protect against new threats that may arise. Engineers also plan upgrades can result into new systems forming because the world around is constantly changing and evolving into something new. Along with these changes are the threats that are present. Engineers also control the retirement process of certain systems. Sometimes certain features or things in a system maybe vulnerable or not working the company anymore. This is also a part of the creation of new systems, creations of the new system may be based off the old system or be similar to it in its function and capabilities. Engineers will always have the contents of what the system is and how its functions and capabilities need to be protected. The most vulnerable part of our society is our infrastructure, like our sewer, water, and electrical grid, these systems need to be protected. The main function of these systems can be turning a pump on or controlling a flood gate, where hundreds of thousands of people could be impacted. Engineers protect these systems by providing safeguards around those systems.

Engineers make cyber networks safer by considering past and possible future cyber-attacks that could crumble infrastructure or a business.
