3D printing and Coding

Thank goodness for Tinkercad. Even with this nifty software, I’m a bit old for this. I’m joking. I can swing it with practice and I tried to make something cool for the Holiday Season. I liked the tutorial because I felt like it gave ample practice. I liked the color choice and shape choices. One of the tutorials went into detail about cutting things and making other shapes. I really think when it comes to 3D printing it is imperative to have all of these options at your fingertips. The uses are endless. I began to brainstorm for my past as an English teacher. There are some hands-on projects we could do. We did a board game project which would have been really cool with the printer. I think I would need some templates but I like the import option on the...

Layered Reality is so Cool!

I really enjoyed this week and working with layered reality. I particularly liked my animal virtual tour. I think it was cool how it felt like I was actually in the museum. I loved angling the camera in different ways to see different parts of the museum, the exhibits, and other things. I think the information was invaluable but also so proactive because you can take a class or yourself on a virtual field trip that actually mimics a real field trip. Deep breath! I’ve been very stressed. I say this to explain how nice it was to leave the comfort of my home without having to do just that. A note on QR codes. I don’t really like them but I know a lot of people do. I see the benefit. I see the benefit not only to life but also to the classroom itself. I choose black and white because I think it pops. I found the choices in the product this week to be similar in ease. I think I’d like to fiddle with this more in my upcoming projects and...

Library Visit 3

Brownsburg Public Library   Jasmyne Ford I’m excited to present the Brownsburg Public Library and some things they use to make a mark in the virtual world: Website: https://www.bburglibrary.net/ Location: 450 South Jefferson street, Brownsburg, IN 46112 Hours: Seasonal Changes- https://www.bburglibrary.net/my-library-card Full Policy: https://32ea3226-d3eb-4624-849a-5172cfe6d163.filesusr.com/ugd/23c523_1eea68d310554dd3a9f5cd98792de6b7.pdf Article: Caldwell, R. (2021). Summer Reading Realities: Many libraries are entering round two of summer reading in a pandemic. American Libraries, 52(5), 48. Summary: Exploring virtual and in-person options during a pandemic and afterward https://web-s-ebscohost-com.proxy.lib.odu.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=11&sid=fef8eb75-8216-44e1-a343-9c2bbd0343d3%40redis Citation: https://www.bburglibrary.net/ WordPress: https://bplreadingsuggestions.wordpress.com/bookmarks/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brownsburgpubliclibrary Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/bburglibrary/videos Twitter: https://twitter.com/bburglibrary Introduction: I was mostly drawn to this article because of reading about Brownsburg in a previous American Library article. I also liked that they were talking about coming out of the lockdown portion of the pandemic. The world is pretty split into people who are still kind of locked down and those who are out in the open. I wanted to see how they would serve a full and possibly split community. I’m pleasantly surprised to have gotten my answer. Resources The search engine is useful, but I didn’t really find a database like we have here or a really good way to look at nonfiction materials anywhere on the site. There were however quite a few e-books, and these were advertised on the site and on socials. I liked that there were a lot of recommendations based on age with pictures of the book covers included. They have a heavy social media presence, but a lot hasn’t been updated in months especially the Youtube. This suggests that they were busier with the virtual world during the lockdown. At the time there were posting advertisements and storytimes more readily. At present, it seems they are doing more of this online. There were audiobooks which were advertised along with the e-books found here: https://brownsburg.overdrive.com/ I really liked that there were big bold pictures and lettering to help guide those who might be new users during the site. I think the library utilized good flow, color, and details to help multiple levels of individuals who probably couldn’t access the information desk during the pandemic. The library provided an app called Libby that expands on the library’s vision of online access. The app was primarily for e-books and audio books. This is a very nice touch to modernize especially for a mid-aged crowd. Magazines were also a focus section of the site and they had quite a few like Entertainment, Time, and US Weekly. I have to say that I love that most magazines offer online access nowadays. The library does offer employment resources, local history, and novels for k-8. They also have some genealogy resources and some special collections focused on past enslaved people. There is a lot more on these things on the website though and not as much on the socials. I wonder if again the socials were more utilized...

Presentations

https://www.smore.com/b6037 I hope the link works above because I worked hard on this. I worked my way through the choices and settled on Smore.com and couldn’t be happier. This was an amazing choice. The others were a lot like canva.com accept for prezi, and emaze which seemed to have some nice choices as far as products are concerned. I don’t think I’ll use this for my big project because it is very much a newsletter but what I did make is amazing and fun. I love the template. I love the colors and the traditional vs. modern choices. The preprogrammed background choices are a nice touch as well. I loved the flow and it reminded me of the book where simplicity can be creative. The other thing I liked was the ease of uploading the...

Hyperdocs

I like to use hyperdocs in two ways. I worked extensively online with homeschoolers and a big thing right now is escape rooms. I love to link to different information, videos, and activities that will further learning. I also like them for working with timelines. For example, I worked on a Medusa escape room and linked to information that showed the two tracks that the story takes place in. I also linked to a Youtube video that highlighted the story and some other side information. I think hyperdocs really are useful and I try to include at least one into each of my...

Video

Kapwing opened my world up as an educator and future librarian. I’ve been using Zoom with my side freelance work a lot because not only can you record but you can host quite nicely. I already was familiar with zoom. I used this system a lot in both online education and other freelance work that I’ve done. What I liked more about Kapwing was basically just the user face. With Zoom, I find that you kind of are already recording and then you are better off using the system’s editing software whereas, with Kapwing, everything is kind of already in there. I also liked what I saw was happening as far as like creating more scenes. Scene creation can really make you a lot of money in the realm of online education if you are creative enough. I actually think I’m going to create a class that allows me to go in and out of this kind of like seeing as I can definitely do the story that I did with more technology using Kapwing. I wasn’t a super big fan of the other programs because I am such a big fan now of Kapwing. I do think Zoom videos are clearer and already do better lighting for you. It does better sound recording as well in my opinion. It more than makes up for what you’re missing. I’m a little behind this week so I would like to explore this even further and the future but please check out the video that I made and give me some feedback especially on Invicta sound lighting and useful from the Kapwing material thank...

Audio

https://tinyurl.com/yff7epu8 Audio File week proved to be a frustrating week for me. All right, so this is a frustrating week for me because the audio would not work. I tried every way that you could possibly think of to upload this audio to this machine and it would not work. It kept saying that for security reasons this MP3 that I kept trying to upload was not going to work. I tried uploading it. I tried using it from the website. I tried using different files. Files that had already been on my computer. Files from a new website. I tried everything and yet I still never got the audio file put on. I tried Voki and I really liked Voki because this is along the lines of how I am as a teacher very bubbly I love that you can use different characters and lots of colors and background you can almost create a story was like that audio and that was one of the things that I would love to see you on here. Vocaroo was simple and clear and I would definitely use that as well. Audiopal was easy to embed it seems except on here with me of course. And I like that audio pal also lets you use different languages and voices so and there’s also no sign-up required which is nice. I’m including this Voki link to check out: https://orangefreesounds.com/8bit-coin-sound-effect/ The Podcast I’m recommending is a teacher’s dream: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/storynory-audio-stories-for-kids/id94571049?mt=2 The setup in the beginning already sets the kids up for thematic things to look for and a bit of foreshadowing. This story is clear and interesting. Story Nory is definitely something I would use in my classroom. I have a learning challenge myself that audio phonics helped me to become an English teacher. I love audio that plays on the fact that there are different ways to...

Infographics

The above infographic is from canva. This was honestly an easy week for me. I love infographics. I think there are so many ways to pull off an infographic but I always pay careful attention to the color scheme and size of the font. I think the colors need to be complimentary and the headers clear. The one below I made on pikochart. I do not like any system I’ve tried yet more than Canva. I actually have a subscription. I do like the warm and cold colors that I was able to utilize in the second...

Images

When I was teaching I spent a lot of time looking up images and citing them but still managed to be intimidated by this minor project. I chose two images from the cite dedicated to the classroom and both images originated at Pixbay. The bulk of this blog post will be on the tools that I experimented with. Above is the untouched image of Medusa. I didn’t manipulate it but I had permission to. The citation was checked and is believed to be correct. The second image which I will post now is the one I did manipulate and try with the different tools. I knew what I was looking for as I looked through the tools. I just wanted a simple word and font to honor my mother. I learned that I really liked Pixlr.com for this because it had a similar feel to Canva which I’ve used in the past teaching. I didn’t like foldplay.com as much because it had a very specific niche to it but I did save it in case I wanted a kaleidoscope or foldbook in the future. Bighugelabs.com also was niche but I would use the things like movie posters and photo booths more...
