SPAN 101

Exploring Culture

LingroLearning allowed me to learn about different cultures and people within those cultures.

Lingro allowed me to get a better understanding of the way Spanish speaking countries operate and think. My family is Chilean so I knew a little bit about it but now I was able to fully indulge myself into the culture. Another practice that helped me so much was speaking to my Spanish speaking teammates on the soccer team.

Engaging in Communities

It is so important to engage in your community because it is a part of who you are. You are your community that you live in. Our community here is so diverse and wonderful. Meeting all new people around campus who speak all different kinds of languages has been a awesome experience for me as a young adult.

Interpersonal Communication

I was able to complete three interviews with my teacher where I spoke only in Spanish the whole time. The first one was for 1-2 minutes. It was in the beginning of the class and I did very well on it. Then, I spoke to her for 5 minutes and the interview was a little more advanced then the last one. Finally, I spoke to her for 10 minutes straight. It really showed my improvement.

In the above paragraph I briefly talked about my assignments and how I was able to improve. Going from barely being able to speak to my teacher for one to two minutes, then three months later, being able to talk to her for ten minutes was cool to see. It was difficult because sometimes it is hard to understand what the teacher is saying so you have to ask her to repeat it a couple times so you can fully think about the question asked.

As time goes on it becomes easier and easier to understand because it becomes second nature. Studying is the biggest part of the class, if you do not study, you will not succeed. What has helped me a lot, was talking to my Spanish speaking friends whenever I got the chance.

Presentational Speaking

I completed four projects. All of them had something to do with culture and recording myself speaking in Spanish. I had to do a tour of the university all in Spanish.

The last project I had to do when I went to three places around the school and described them was very difficult. I had to describe the place, say something I do here, something I like about it, and something I do not like about it. It took me a bit of time to complete it. In the end it was a great learning experience.

Presentational Writing

I had to write a paragraph about Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera. I also had to write about myself and what I like to do.

I excelled at writing about myself because it is the easiest part, its about myself. What I struggled at was finding words to describe people I do not know, such as Frida Khalo. It definitely improved my skills of identifying a characteristic of someone and then knowing the word in Spanish.

Interpretive Listening

There were countless times where we had to listen to audio then either spell the word or conjugate it in a different form.

I had to listen to a lot of words and sentences to either choose a picture or spell the words. They were good exercises because I was able to put audio into words. It improved my Spanish because when I went to class I could recognize words.

Interpretive Reading

LingroLearning.com

Spanish was just unclear to me because it is not my first language. Seeing and reading the language everyday really helped me become a better speaker. Lingro is a great platform and it ensures that you complete the necessary steps to become good at understanding, reading, and speaking Spanish.
