A data breach is when an unauthorized individual violates confidential data
by viewing, copying, stealing, or transmitting it. Numerous people receive data
breach notices in the mail due to an unauthorized person maliciously hacking
into their data. Criminals who perpetrate fraud targets and techniques are
continuously evolving. With fraudulent behaviors constantly growing an active
state legislature is a quick-thinking way in terms of consumer protection. For
example, “the California Attorney General’s breach website posts
notice letters regarding breaches in which Californians’ personal information
has been compromised.” This is a useful way for researchers to study
breaches. The purpose of these notices is to provide plenty of information
about the breach to the targeted individuals so they can act and not become a
victim of fraud. Breach organizations offer a credit monitoring service which
monitors targeted individual’s credit report for accounts opened by scammer and
helps the individual close them before any damage is done. Some individuals
affected by data breaches don’t want credit monitoring but are interested in
identity repair which designed its services in repair rather than monitoring.
Overall, individuals should not have to deal with data breaches but if they do
there should always be actions to take to protect themselves.
