Journal #1

Hello everyone! I am Jayson Gochez, and I am very excited to begin my first semester at ODU. I am a transfer student, and my major is cyber security. I am originally from San Salvador, El Salvador, which is in Central America (Not Mexico).

I moved from there to Richmond, Virginia in 2005, where I graduated high school and started taking classes at the local community college.

In 2016, I was hired at Capital One in the fraud division of banking, where I gained an interest in cyber security. After going back and forth for a few years on what I wanted to study, I realized that cyber security is my calling. This is my very first class in cyber security, but I have done side by sides and trainings in my day to day work with Capital One. The primary reason I selected this path is because I’ve seen firsthand the importance of cyber security, and its continuous evolution in the banking industry. Especially as banks and other institutions adapt to a more digital world, keeping clients’ information safe remains a top priority. When a cyber-attack on a company as large as Capital One is successful, it results in significant monetary loses to the bank. Not only that, it damages their reputation as a trusted banking institution, as well as any third- party companies affiliated with the business. After completing the first module, I was able to identify many components that I see day to day. I can appreciate how important it is to ensure that every piece of data stored in our systems is secured. Capital One excels in providing opportunities for the cybersecurity department to collaborate with employees at all levels to ensure there are no vulnerabilities. Also, leaders continuously enforce training to all staff, which keeps all our networks and departments on the same page about expectations and how everyone can play their part in supporting cybersecurity. The establishing and enforcing correct security guidelines plays an enormous role in maintaining all equipment and data well protected.

Although at the current moment, I only have a quick glance into what I will learn within the cyber security major at ODU, I am thrilled to get started and learn more, which I’m sure will support me in my current role at Capital One, and more so when I begin to look for a career directly related to cyber security.
