Discussion – From Verbeek’s writing, Designing the Public Sphere: Information Technologies and the Politics of Mediation
- Regulation has to shift from strict centralized models to more adaptable, ethical, and scattered structures as state power declines and the material world grows more intelligent and networked. Higher standards of accountability and openness should be applied to markets and businesses, especially in regard to the way they create and apply technology. Instead of responding after harm has been done regulation should be active, integrating ethical issues into creation. Clear boundaries and instruction on digital responsibility are also necessary for both individuals and groups. In order to stay up with our quickly changing technology environment, governance needs to become a team effort that involve designers, users, and institutions.
