Discussion – The “Short Arm” of Predictive Knowledge
- To Jonas, we usually lack the capacity to completely predict the effects of the technical decisions we make because of the “short arm” of predictive knowledge. We must therefore adopt a cautious, accountability driven approach to cyber policy and infrastructure. We should put long term safety, moral foresight, and possible risks especially those that aren’t immediately apparent above quickly introducing new tools or systems based just on their apparent advantages. This involves including a range of viewpoints in decision making, revising policies often in response to changing risks, and creating strong but flexible systems. Being uncertain doesn’t mean inaction but rather planned logical advancement.
