The top five nations affected by cybercrime are the US, China, Brazil, Germany, and India. The most common attack across the countries is spam emails. It’s said that spam emails make up more than 70% of all emails sent. The United States is the top target for phishing attacks, making up 60% of the worlds fishing attack volume. While the harm to a single person may not be all that much, coming in at an estimated $1,800 loss per person, the cost to businesses attacked is much more at $20,070. The next most common form of internet fraud is called the advanced fee fraud scheme. In this form of cybercrime, the attacker sends out a spam email claiming the victim has won something or that they’ve received a very good offer for something. Once the victim responds to the email, the attacker says the victim must send a wire transfer for an “advance fee”. Protecting the US can be difficult because of the sheer size of the North American power grid, which covers America, Canada, and parts of Mexico. Unlike most countries the power grid is not state, or nation owned, but instead investor owned. While our power grid has many differences from the power grids of other countries, we can still learn from their mistakes and what they do well. Such as making improvements to fight an against a catastrophic storm. Because our power grid does cover multiple countries, the way it is protected varies slightly between each one. The DOE and NRCan both act as the primary roles for grid security across the different countries. But, there are subtle differences in the way the private sector and government have responsibilities. This doesn’t mean that the countries act alone when it comes to solving issues. In fact, they will usually collaborate both on a day-to-day basis under routine conditions and in an emergency.
