The interaction between offenders and victims of cyber technology is that the technology provides a medium for repeat offenses. Restricting the access to this is actually quite impossible. However, increasing the awareness of these crimes and increasing the repercussions of committing such crimes, in theory, would prevent or limit the amount of offenses. When it comes to raising awareness, many cybercrimes are as simple as cyber harassment and cyber stalking. This usually occurs with minors, especially cyber harassment. it is important for parents or guardians to have access to social media accounts of their children so that they can monitor any social interactions. Also, it would be a good idea for guardians to utilize parental controls on their children’s accounts. The same rules apply with cyber stalking. Parents should disallow contact with strangers or otherwise dangerous people.
Other cybercrimes include distributing malware, malicious data acquisition, and disrupting day to day operations. When it comes to malware, with the rise of the technology of today’s caliber, malware programs and how they are distributed, are more complex and sophisticated than ever. As for data acquisition, it is easier than ever to steal or capture data considering that most businesses use unprotected wireless networks, or “guest networks”, for customer to use at their leisure at the expense of privacy. And finally, the disruption of day to day operations has become a common theme in the world of business and technology. Many businesses have encountered distributed denial of service attacks on their systems. With the advances in tools such as botnets, and the overall increase of internet users, hackers can utilize more individual’s personal computers to perform a denial of service attack, than ever before. These are just some of the ways that technology has affected offenders and those who are victims. It has made cybercrime more dangerous than ever before.
