Interview A Health Professional

Tharta Renee King

Nurse Practitioner

Registered Nurse Virginia Common Wealth University  Specialization in Psychiatric & Mental Health

  1. Always had the love and passion for helping people throughout their mental health issues. She started off as being a mental health counselor but when she started in the field she realized that she needed something else to help them.
  2. Mrs. King  started out with my masters in mental health counseling.  She was in the field for about 5 years, then  started to pursue her nursing degree at Virginia Commonwealth University . Mrs. King started working at a central state hospital  & during that time she worked well with the psychiatric nurses and she pursed more education to learn more about why my client was taking the medication they was taking for each medication, she was intrigued on learning more about the clients meds. From there she went back to school for nursing.

Mrs. King basic roles is to have the patient come in to discuss their mental health status to asses for  homicidal / suicidal  ideations, medication abuse, substance abuse , bipolar, depression, anxiety, grief and anger. Also she  may even take patients take blood pressure.

  • My favorite reward is the success stories. When Mrs. King provided the medication and the patient does very well with being on the medication.
  • The most surprising is when patients can be in crisis. Crisis is  when she has to call the ambulance to come get the patient when patient gets out of control (to much for her to handle).
  • The most challenging, is telling the patient that she can’t proscribe them the medication. Its hard to not give medication to the patients because some of them will abuse the medication or even try to make money off the medication. In this type of field have to be very careful, even when you are trying your best to help them.
  •  Advice Mrs. King gave to me is that going to school is very important and that I need to stay focused. Stay on top of my grades and meet with my teachers for one on one talks as well. Study for each class and  ask questions during class time. Mrs. King has also told me to never give up when I feel stressed out, she said to keep striving for greatness.

I have learned that I need to study very hard even when I don’t want to. As well as have patience. It’s important for me to have selfcare, don’t stress. To be successful throughout my classes and clinical settings. To manage my time wisely. Also to have the right attitude and motivation.
