In Fall 2018, I applied for an internship at WHRO Public Media and was awarded the position to serve as a radio and TV producer assistant. This opportunity lasted August 27 through December 7. This position was within the Broadcast and Digital Media Department which outlines:

  • Contribute to show and programming rundown, screen phone calls, guide guests in and out of the studios for various shows.
  • Submit drafts of the listings for the following week schedules and materials.  Timeliness  is crucial to the internship in terms of showing up for allotted hours and submitting work by the given deadlines.
  • Handle and accept constructive criticism
  • Assist with music library maintenance of WHRO-90.3FM.
  • Import materials into automation systems, (including entering and editing the musical information)
  • Data entry and music library organization
  • Shadow WHRO staff members to learn the ins and outs of Radio production.

All internships at WHRO are unpaid and require reliability and dependability.

During my Fall 2018 internship at WHRO Public Media, I learned to :

  • Establish connections with professionals within my field of study
  • Improve my time management and public relations skills
  • Better my multi-media skills

Conducting research on The Historic Attucks Theatre: Apollo of the South was one of my major projects for my internship. The 100 year old Attucks Theatre was named after an African American – Crispus Attucks – who was the first person killed in the Boston Massacre. In 1982, The Attucks was added to the National Register of Historic Places, remaining the only building funded, furnished and designed by African- Americans in the United States. Famous performers such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Gary U.S Bonds performed here. I had the pleasure of sitting-in on interviews, traveling to different shoots and providing input for scripts in preparation for the documentary.
