Old Dominion University offers many majors including over “73 bachelor’s degrees, 70 master’s degrees, 35 doctoral degrees”. These spread into a wide variety of fields such as STEM, business, arts, and education. Of these majors, I believe four of them can relate to cybersecurity. The first, and maybe the most obvious, major that is related to cybersecurity is computer science. These two professions can work hand-in-hand in future careers. They are similar because both programs require a decent amount of programming skills, experience with algorithms and data structures, and knowledge of computer operating systems. Computer science programs offer fundamental knowledge that cybersecurity students also use to protect computer systems and respond to cyber-attacks. The second major that can relate to cybersecurity is information technology or IT. This major emphasizes the management of technology, focusing on the storage of data with the use of computers and networks, similar to computer science as well. These majors are related to each other because both career paths work together. For example, someone in the IT department will work closely with the cybersecurity team in order to make a fair and secure infrastructure. Other than their career pathways, communication is also crucial to both majors. The third program I believe is closely related to cybersecurity is computer engineering. As cyber threats and hackers evolve, the hardware and components of a computer system will need to be upgraded as well. Someone in a computer engineering program would more than likely have a great foundation when introduced to cybersecurity. The fourth major I think is similar to cybersecurity is data science. According to ODU, This program guarantees that students will “learn to use data for identifying trends and patterns, solving problems, communicating results, and recommending optimal solutions”. These skills are valuable to cyber experts; finding trends allows us to predict potential threats and prepare with the correct security measures. Data science students also assess risks and develop response strategies, similar to what cybersecurity teaches.
