Service Learning Assignment

Cheseapeke Care Clinic:

The organization that I researched was the Chesapeake Care Clinic. Volunteers at this clinic can experience helping patients whether it’s clinical or non-clinical. A person can volunteer as an administrator. This will help the clinic run as smoothly as possible. In addition, volunteers can help dentists, hygienists, specialists, medical assistants, and etc. Volunteers can also experience conducting projects, maintaining the building, cooking, and delivering meals to the staff and other volunteers within the clinic.

2.Please write a description of the Community Partner(s) by answering these questions:

  1.  The purpose of the Chesapeake Care Clinic is to provide medical and dental care to people with low incomes in the Hampton Roads area. The clinic provides a range of services. The dental part of the clinic allows preventative care for patients: cleanings, screenings,  restorative fillings, dentures, and even extractions. It also offers annual exams for women, medical assistance programs, counseling for mental health, and management for chronic diseases. The clinic helps people with low income. Many people do not have health insurance or dental insurance. The clinic is like a bridge for people that are insured. The Chesapeake Care Clinic is important to the community because it provides options for patients and others that many organizations in Hampton Roads do not. People are getting the healthcare they need.
  2. Find one article/video about the organization and the work they are doing in the community.  There is an article written by the Virginian Pilot. The article’s name is Chesapeake Care Clinic continues to serve the Uninsured. It is about the clinic that has been helping patients during the pandemic. Dental work is only for emergencies: however, the revised blood pressure cuffs. The blood pressure cuffs allow the patients to record their blood pressure and monitor it. The clinic continues to aid patients as much as possible during this difficult time.

3. After reflecting on the organization’s goals and mission,  have your values, opinions, and/or beliefs about the importance of health changed or grown?  Be specific.

4. Thinking about the community partner:

  1. How do these services relate to your intended career field? The services related to my intended career field because I intended to be a dental hygienist. Many of the services the clinic provides will be the services I will be doing once I am a certified Dental Hygienist.
  2. What Degree Program (other than your current major) could it relate to? It can relate to being a mental health counselor. Many patients in the clinic could have suffered from mental illness and the clinic helps the patients find programs.
  3. Would you choose to pursue that major as your parallel major? I would not choose a mental health counselor as my parallel major. Why or why not? Being a counselor is not something I want to do. I want to treat patients whether it’s in the dental field or not. Having patients and helping to elevate some of their needs is something I want to pursue in whatever career I end up in.
