STEP 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS

  1. Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
    1. What specific techniques do you use in class? Each class requires me to study a little bit differently. For sociology and History, I read the notes before the next class to have a better understanding of the topic. I take notes and review lectures if it is available. I review the lectures to clarify any topics that I may be unsure about or missed during class. My sociology class provides practice quizzes as well. English does require studying. Finally, for chemistry, I search practice worksheets and tests to practice the topics of the week.
    2. What specific techniques do you use outside of class?   I can find the location of where I study. I found out that studying in my room can leave me distracted a lot, whether it is from the people outside walking, the food in my room, or the items on my desk. Going to the library or a study room helps me limit any distractions and focus on my work.
  2. Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101).   What study methods work best and why? I am doing very well in sociology now.   The study method that works for me is reading the chapters in advance. Taking notes and making practice quizzes help me do well in that class. Taking practice quizzes helps me remember the information better.

STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES

  1. Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.  The only class that I have challenges in is History. The strategies that I can use while studying can be creating milestones for each subchapter like getting a five-minute break, instead of reading the whole chapter. I can also have group conversations with my classmates, to discuss the chapters or any questions I may have. For History, I study for about two to three hours, depending on the workload. After each hour, I have to take a break and get up to stretch my legs. It gives my eyes a chance to rest, as well. The information that has been taught in the class so far has been a mini-review of what I have learned throughout middle and high school. However, I should focus on the new information first and then go back and revive the topics that I have previously learned.
    1. When it comes to studying history, I think I could be a little bit more systematic. I could work on planning set times for studying for certain periods of time. When I study it is for a long period of time and I think it is taking a toll on my brain. I could try to study a topic for 45 minutes to an hour each day. The learning support program at Old Dominion is extremely useful. I used the writing center a lot lately, for essays and my outline for a history project. I will use it again for my essay on history. The writing center provides great feedback to me. It is hard to maintain motivation for studying. There have been times where I did not want to study and just wanted to relax but I had to remember why I came to college. Studying will help me do well in my classes and closer to my dream job. If I was confused about anything in the class I usually ask one of my classmates, look back in the textbook, or one of the lectures. If none of those things work, then I will just email my professor.
    2. When I was studying for my exam, I found that sitting outside in the nice weather helped me focus more than being in an enclosed building. Staring to study early also helped me as well. If I did not prepare early, I would end up overwhelmed. Studying around people was challenging, for certain classes that may work. However, for history, I preferred to have my own study sessions because I think I would get distracted by having a conversation with someone.  I am not sure which answers I answered incorrectly on my exam. I answered my questions with a lot of details and used my notes to help me answer the questions the best I could.

  1. Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tips What is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material? I can use the Cornell note system when I’m taking notes during class. It will also help with exams for history and my other classes as well.
  2. What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material? Making flash cards for key concepts that I’m having trouble remembering is a technique that i can use outside of class to help me understand the martial better.
