Mid-Semester Reflection
Mid-Semester
Study habits

- How much time do you spend studying for each class every week? I spend about two to three hours for each class. Sometimes I spend a little bit more time; it just depends on what is due or what is coming up. For example, I spend about 3 hours studying chemistry, history, and sociology but it takes me about 2 hours to study English.
- Do you need to put more time into studying, and for which class or classes? I feel like I should put more time into studying chemistry. It is harder to study for the class because it’s an asynchronous class and not a scheduled class. Due to it being asynchronous, I feel like I do not put as much focus and attention to chemistry.
- Where do you study? I used to study in the study rooms but since they are closed, I have been going to Webb to study. I found that I complete a lot more work in a different environment than in my room where I’m comfortable. If I study in my room, truly little work will be accomplished.
- Do you often find yourself distracted while studying? Yes, I do sometimes, I will let food and drinks distract me at times. Once I get thirsty and hungry and I feel that need, I love to focus on my work a little bit.
- What could you do to remove these distractions? I could eat before I study and make sure I am well hydrated to limit the distractions in my studies.
- What time of day do you study? I study at nighttime. I always felt comfortable studying at night. I have the most energy at night, so I spend the most time doing my work. I will study in the morning if I need to focus on a topic a little more than others.
- i. Do you feel focused and alert at this time? At night, I have a lot of energy and I tend to stay up late because of it. So at night I can focus more on my work versus the day time, I get very distracted by everything around me easily.
- Learning style
- What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? How do these vary from class to class? Doing a lot of practice quizzes helps me in all my classes. It helps me prepare for tests and quizzes and I remember how to answer a problem when I do this.
- What new study techniques have you tried this semester based on what you have learned about learning styles?
- Transition to college
- Has college been what you expected? When I came to college, I was not, to be honest. I was expecting to have online classes, but I expected the workload to get harder and the classes to be challenging.
- In what way is your college experience different from what you expected? College is different from what I expected especially with COVID-19. COVID-19 has changed college a lot. I thought I would have in-person classes, but I only have one in-person class and the rest course online.
- What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester? The number of people that I made connections with surprised me. I was not expecting to meet a lot of people this year.
- Has college been what you expected? When I came to college, I was not, to be honest. I was expecting to have online classes, but I expected the workload to get harder and the classes to be challenging.
- If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome? The toughest thing to overcome was being away from my family for such a long period of time. I am really close to them, so being away from them was hard to get used to.
- Connecting to campus
- Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation. I was having trouble trying to pay for tuition and financial aid for my account. I contacted a person who works in financial aid and she walked through the issues, the issue was resolved.
- Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you? Yes, I met with a success coach, she helped me understand any information regarding any hold I had on my account and other things that were available on campus. I met with some friends as well, we have the same classes, and it makes it easier to talk about topics that I may need help on.
- Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved? No, I did not attend any clubs, I do not think joining a club is best for me now. I want to wait to join a club during my sophomore or junior year.
