Mid-Semester Reflection

Mid-Semester

Study habits

  1. How much time do you spend studying for each class every week?  I spend about two to three hours for each class. Sometimes I spend a little bit more time; it just depends on what is due or what is coming up. For example, I spend about 3 hours studying chemistry, history, and sociology but it takes me about 2 hours to study English.
    1. Do you need to put more time into studying, and for which class or classes?  I feel like I should put more time into studying chemistry. It is harder to study for the class because it’s an asynchronous class and not a scheduled class. Due to it being asynchronous, I feel like I do not put as much focus and attention to chemistry.
  2. Where do you study?  I used to study in the study rooms but since they are closed, I have been going to Webb to study. I found that I complete a lot more work in a different environment than in my room where I’m comfortable. If I study in my room, truly little work will be accomplished.
    1. Do you often find yourself distracted while studying?  Yes, I do sometimes, I will let food and drinks distract me at times. Once I get thirsty and hungry and I feel that need, I love to focus on my work a little bit.
    1. What could you do to remove these distractions? I could eat before I study and make sure I am well hydrated to limit the distractions in my studies.
  3. What time of day do you study? I study at nighttime. I always felt comfortable studying at night. I have the most energy at night, so I spend the most time doing my work. I will study in the morning if I need to focus on a topic a little more than others.
  4.      i.      Do you feel focused and alert at this time? At night, I have a lot of energy and I tend to stay up late because of it. So at night I can focus more on my work versus the day time, I get very distracted by everything around me easily.
  1. Learning style
    1. What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?  How do these vary from class to class? Doing a lot of practice quizzes helps me in all my classes. It helps me prepare for tests and quizzes and I remember how to answer a problem when I do this.
    2. What new study techniques have you tried this semester based on what you have learned about learning styles?
  2. Transition to college
    1. Has college been what you expected? When I came to college, I was not, to be honest. I was expecting to have online classes, but I expected the workload to get harder and the classes to be challenging.
      1. In what way is your college experience different from what you expected?  College is different from what I expected especially with COVID-19. COVID-19 has changed college a lot. I thought I would have in-person classes, but I only have one in-person class and the rest course online.
      1. What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester? The number of people that I made connections with surprised me. I was not expecting to meet a lot of people this year.
  1. If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome? The toughest thing to overcome was being away from my family for such a long period of time. I am really close to them, so being away from them was hard to get used to.
  2. Connecting to campus
    1. Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation. I was having trouble trying to pay for tuition and financial aid for my account. I contacted a person who works in financial aid and she walked through the issues, the issue was resolved.
    2. Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you?  Yes, I met with a success coach, she helped me understand any information regarding any hold I had on my account and other things that were available on campus. I met with some friends as well, we have the same classes, and it makes it easier to talk about topics that I may need help on.
    3. Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved? No, I did not attend any clubs, I do not think joining a club is best for me now. I want to wait to join a club during my sophomore or junior year.
