Although cybersecurity is its own major and discipline within itself, it can all be considered an interdisciplinary major. Cybersecurity is dealing with the security and protection of various systems and technologies but can it really be said that cybersecurity specialists are doing all the securing and protecting without some other form of technological knowledge? With that being said, some other majors that are offered by Old Dominion University (ODU) are Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, and Cyber Crime. Computer science, in a broad sense, is the study of computers. On a more technical aspect, it’s the computer computational systems. This major is built around the computational, and programming, aspects of computers. The programming aspect is only one part of computer science but these programs have to be tested and proven secure; these programs are being written to access information whether it be to all access to a building or bring up a file. This major relates to cybersecurity because a part of cybersecurity is the CIA triad, Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability and these computer scientists help keep this part of cybersecurity true. Computer engineering pulls from both electrical and computer science to help understand all software designs. This relates to cybersecurity because if the software is underdeveloped it can lead to easy exploitations which can hurt businesses and individuals drastically. Information technology(IT) is the study, design, development, implementation, support, or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. Just like cybersecurity specialists, IT professionals too work to make sure that systems are running the latest software and that policies are being effectively used by the users to keep the cybersecurity triad effective. Lastly is cybercrime, which prepares students for careers in law enforcement and information technology. This relates to cybersecurity because they are investigating the crimes that occur over the internet.
