Entry 3: Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.

As previously mentioned before in a previous posting, the world of technology as we know it is constantly evolving. These new features have made the way we as individuals go about our daily activities. Instead of physically carrying our debit cards, we just tap our phones at the register to pay for items. Instead of writing checks and getting money orders to pay bills, it’s more convenient to type in our credit card numbers into the computer to pay bills. More recently, with the economy practically going completely virtual, business deals were done remotely and ordinary things like shopping were done and delivered to us. These new technological advancements have given more opportunities for black hat hackers to obtain our information. With that being said, ethical issues have started to become more of an issue when it comes to our sensitive information. Some of those issues include improper usage of information, data breaches failing to be reported, the selling of information, and data discrepancies. All of these issues are equally important because, at the root of the problem, our information, and our privacy is at stake. With these concerns in mind, if some of the concerns listed above occur, it can and does make companies and organizations look unprofessional and reckless leading individuals not wanting to trust them. Ethical issues don’t just come out of the middle of nowhere; somewhere along the line, an authorized user violated the policy when it comes to the storage and usage of confidential information of individuals. Information needs to be stored properly to prevent these issues from arising. One of the most feared out of the four, in my opinion, is a data breach. A data breach is when an individual’s personal information has been compromised in the hands of an unauthorized user. Breaches in their own right can lead to the other three ethical issues identified because once in unauthorized hands, it’s hard to say what is being done to the information.
