Deviance can be described as something or someone that has departed and goes against the rules and norms that are accepted in society. With technology thrown in the mix and with technology constantly developing, in a way, has made it easier for individuals to use technology in creating problems within the workforce. Technology can be accessible to anyone, whether it be a personal device or a device issued to an individual, the extent to which they are used if placed in the wrong hands, can cause significant damage to a workplace. Workplace deviance can be described as intentional acts to cause harm to an organization. One way that technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance is retaliation. Employees are constantly being laid off due to budget cuts and working with individuals with whom they don’t get along with. There have even been altercations between employees and their employers leading them to be fired. Sometimes an individual won’t even say anything to their employee and would just verbally lash out their anger towards a company and even potentially not do damage to the reputation of said company. With most of the world, today being heavily dependent upon technology, most of a company’s information is stored electronically. Since the information is being stored electronically, companies and other workplaces have to be careful about how and who can access it to be able to access information. When an employee becomes dissatisfied with how a company is being run, those with access to sensitive information can potentially leak the information, steal or even sell the information causing a data breach. That breach in return can cause companies money trying to recover. It’s important when having cybersecurity training that employees are being educated on policies and that these policies are being enforced to help deviate from potential workplace deviance.
