Technology is constantly evolving. With these evolvements, there are new ways being discovered by hackers to break into our systems and cause problems. A computer, in my opinion, can’t be completely safe. While a computer can be considered safe fresh from the factory, what about when the computer reaches the user? The user is the biggest threat there is to a computer system. Actions and preventive methods can be taken to keep a computer safe from malicious content and exploitation. To start, a password is one of the most important ways to protect and keep your computer safe. Using unique passwords that only the user knows can keep private information private. Users can even add another layer of security by having some other form of authentication to verify the user is who they are claiming to be. Another way to keep computers safe is to download and install antivirus software. This type of software can constantly run in the background scanning applications that are being used and even once that are in the process of being downloaded to see if they are infected or not. Keeping software on your computer up is critical. When companies send out these various updates, it normally means that an ethical or nonethical hacker has exploited a system and these updates contain patches that can help keep a system from being exploited in the same way. A firewall can help as well. Firewalls are capable of monitoring the flow of traffic to and from a network. If something is detected, a message would warn a user about what was found and what could be done next such as proceeding to the website or being redirected back to a search engine. Education is always important. Training and teaching users what to look out for and being able to identify potential malicious content is vital as well. Show users the importance of keeping passwords kept private, locking computers once they have left them, not clicking on malicious links and much more can help keep computers safe.
