Personal Statement

At a young age, I was in a car accident that could have ended my life. I flew out of the back of a car window while driving back home with my family. After making it out, I realized I had no broken bones or serious injury. Being a spiritual person, this event led me to assume that I have a path to pursue. From that moment forward I had dedicated my life to having a purpose. I had found a career that catered to my strengths and passions; as well as benefit my future lifestyle. So my plan after graduating with my Bachelors degree in biology is to become a biomedical lab officer in the Air Force.

The primary source of my decision in my career  stems from my family and personal relationships. Throughout my childhood I moved across the country due to my parents being in the military. My parents are retired Navy veterans, as well as my brother who is currently active duty. Since the military played a huge role in my childhood I decided to join JROTC in my high school years. However, my school only had the Air Force as its branch. When the years passed I saw the Air Force as an option for my future. Not only was I interested in my extracurricular ,but I had also gained a passion for science. Stem classes came easy to me, especially chemistry and biology. I had the opportunity to go to college for free through my parents’ benefits. So I decided to attend Old Dominion University because the majority of my friends were going as well as its proximity to home. There I chose to be a biology major because of the love I have for research and animals. With choosing this degree my plans for the Air Force still have not changed. Since I decided to pursue the college route first, I plan on becoming an officer in the Air Force rather than enlisting straight in . There I can take my degree and use it for the passion I have for biology.

Being aware how extracurricular activities helped me find myself and passions, I dedicated myself to joining some extracurriculars in college that would help me find connections and opportunities. One group in particular called the Filipino American Student Association had made sure my interests and opportunities were met. They had plenty of volunteer opportunities that helped animals, students, and the community. The most memorable trip was to the zoo where I was able to help the keepers clean and feed the animals. They had also held events where we had to work as a team and find others strengths to accomplish  a certain goal. By joining different clubs I had made myself my own community where we uplift each other and conquer challenges together.
