Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?

In my last few years of high school, I was unsure of what to pursue in college and what to pursue for a career. I’d always been more interested in artistic pursuits but knew that a career in that field would be overwhelming and strip me of my passion for the arts. I’d heard about cybersecurity in my senior year of high school and found the concept to be interesting, though I’m still learning about what the topic entirely entails. I debated between accounting and cybersecurity for a few summers until I met with an academic advisor and decided that cybersecurity technology would be the area of study for me. Growing up and seeing movies and TV shows where characters would hack into databases and infiltrate systems was always very interesting to see, but of course I would never use this subject maliciously! I’ve always doubted my learning capabilities in more STEM related topics, but I don’t want this doubt to taint my experience with cybersecurity technology. I want to earnestly understand and engage with cybersecurity technology, as every facet of our lives is affected by it. Technology is becoming more and more advanced, which is a positive thing, but of course there are people who want to take advantage of this change and being able to provide security would be an amazing impact on society. I know I would want my information to be as secure as possible, and it would be a privilege to do that for others. I know a job directly in cybersecurity technology won’t be guaranteed, but there are other similar fields that I’d be satisfied with. As we as a society improve technologies, it is pivotal that cybersecurity be something that we dedicate resources and energy to, and I want to be a part of that initiative.
