Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
Criminology, Business Administration/Management, Psychology, Information Technology.
Criminology- Criminology focuses on studying crime/criminals. The main point of criminology is to understand why people commit crime and to develop humane ways to address criminals while also preventing future crimes. This major is also inter-disciplinary, with the cultural and mental aspects also being taken into consideration when studying crime statistics. These fields include sociology, psychology, economics, statistics, and cybersecurity among others. Crimes can be committed anywhere, which includes cyberspace, which is where cybersecurity comes into play. By combining the efforts of criminologists and cyber security specialists, they can detect crimes before they occur and build defenses during times of political unrest, periods of high online vulnerability, and even create safe guards for the future by analyzing crime data.
Business Administration- Business Administration focuses on the administration of a commercial business, the major encompasses the overseeing of a business, proper administration techniques, business research, and economics and finance. Business Administration is meant to prepare students with the necessary skills to create, run, and uphold a business, while also exploring HR and marketing. Cybersecurity and Business Administration interlap, as every successful and reputable business needs a secure cybersecurity infrastructure. Customers and business partners need to know that their information and assets are protected and with well-developed frameworks that security is possible.
Psychology- Psychology focuses on studying the mind and behavior while also exploring conscious/unconscious phenomena. Psychology attempts to understand brain functions and how they affect one’s behavior, memory, language, and learning capabilities. It attempts to understand the effects of one’s environment to their mind/mental health as well. Cybersecurity and psychology don’t seem to be inter-disciplinary, but the 2 majors do rely on each other to gain accurate and more meaningful results. CS can be improved by analyzing cyber criminals, which can be done with psychology. Analyzing their motives, upbringings, personalities, social environments, and behavior can help CS specialists gain an understanding of potential threats.
Information Technology- Information Technology is the use of computers to create databases, store information, exchange data, and is mainly found in business environments. IT can consist of databases, network management, technical support, and software development in a business setting. IT and CS overlap in many ways, with their main motives being very similar. Both majors focus on ensuring that data remains secure and protected, while creating efficient systems to do so. They rely heavily on each other to complete their goals.
