Article Review #1: Cybercrime Laws in Iraq

Introduction

The article under review, titled “Cybercrime Laws in Iraq: Addressing Limitations for Effective Governance”, looks at the general policies in place within Iraq under a lens, with the goal of providing effective solutions to the current ineffective governance. The article answers many prevalent questions relating to the topic, such as what is the current cybercrime legislation that exists in Iraq, what limitations does the current government infrastructure in Iraq have that renders it ineffective at stopping cybercrime, and what administrative measures could be introduced to improve the legislation. The study within the article employs various research methods, mainly using qualitative research methodology to gather a detailed analysis of the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of the current cybercrime laws in Iraq. The data within the article is described as the answers to the research questions. 

Relation to Social Sciences

The article relates to various principles of social science. The weak legislation in Iraq relates to the principle of criminology, as it is the main factor that makes cybercrime so prevalent in Iraq compared to other countries. There is less risk and drawback to perform such actions, as there are less overall consequences. The analysis within the article describes prevention measures and improved legislation suggestions that would help to eliminate this root problem currently faced in Iraq. Another principle of social science that relates to this article is economics. Cybercrime as a whole can potentially severely impact the economic structure of a country, which is evident based on the research provided within the article. Economics also factor into the legislation itself, as effective cybercrime prevention does cost a large amount of resources, and it is up to the country to decide if benefits of investment outweigh the economic risk. Lastly, political science is very important to this topic. The root of the problem described within the article is the ineffectiveness of the current government in stopping cybercrime. The article states a clear belief that the current government strategies hinder the possibility of stopping cybercrime and unintentionally promote it, as the legislation is weak compared to other such countries. As political science is described as the study of political decision making, this is very important to the topic of the article. 

Marginalized Groups and Societal Contributions

The Marginalized group of the study would be the victims of rampant cybercrime that exists within Iraq. These people are subject to risks of identity theft, economic loss, and an overall breach of their personal privacy with an increased risk of cybercrime happening. 

This article contributes significantly to its society in many ways. First, it provides suggestions that would improve the quality of life of its citizens in Iraq by working to eliminate the risks of breaches to privacy. It also helps to inform others of the systematic problems in Iraq in regards to cybersecurity.

Conclusion

The reviewed article, “Cybercrime Laws in Iraq: Addressing Limitations for Effective Governance,” identifies clear faults within the cybersecurity policies of Iraq and gives various solutions to help solve the issues. This article is relevant to the social science aspects of criminology, economics, and political science that we learned about in class in many ways. The article also makes several contributions to the society of Iraq by not only identifying a problem, but striving to solve the problem in the most effective way possible.
