Reflections
Pre-semester reflection:
Transition to college
- What are you most excited about for your first semester of college? I’m most excited about engaging with my classmates and getting to know everyone a little more. Really trying to get the antisocial out of me so I can become more kind to others and have some friends. I feel like this class will help me out of my shell and want to get out of my comfort zone.
- What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester? (Think about living on your own, time management, procrastination, making friends etc…) My biggest challenge will be how I’ll manage my time. I struggle with procrastination badly so sometimes I’ll try my best to start on the assignment and I might finish it but it really depends if I’m struggling on the assignment or starting to get tired. When I don’t start on the assignment when the teacher first assigns it and sets a due date for the assignment I’ll wait 2 days before I will start to work on it.
- What other time commitments will you have during your first semester (job, sports, student organization etc…). I really didn’t want to have any other commitments during my first semester because I wanted to be focused and less stressed. I felt like it would be so much, especially since this is my freshman year in college. Once I become more comfortable with my classes and my schedule I will probably think about a job.
- In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any? In high school I participated in majorette and track. They were the two major things I did in high school that I seem to really enjoy.
- Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience? If not, why not? I would like to join a sorority. I expect to gain new opportunities and to get out of my comfort zone and to just have fun.
Major/Career
- What is your intended major and why did you choose this major? Nursing is my major. I chose this major because I always wanted to be a nurse. Not any nurse, a Rn or a pediatrician or a traveling nurse. I’ve always had a weak spot for babies so as a child seeing the nurses take care of the babies I knew I wanted to do the same.
- What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you? Some skills I’ve have are helping others when they need it most physically and mentally. I think this is the best option for me because I do have a weak spot for helping others and it makes me feel good when I do.
- What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career? I’ve taken care of my grandmother that has diabetes and that had a kidney transplant.
- What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)? To become a registered nurse to be engaged or married and in the process of getting an apartment or a home and to have an excellent paying job.
- Study habits
- What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college? The teachers. Why I say this is because they don’t make any excuses or anything when it comes to you showing up for class. They’re not going to tell you that you need to do your work or basically hold your hand.
- Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”? Explain your answer. Yes studying is going over notes or old homework assignments. Homework is completing an assignment for you to use to study.
- List each class, and tell us how much time you expect to study per week for each class. Chemistry 30 mins
- English comp 20min
- Sociology 20min
- Chemistry lab 20 min
- Where do you plan to study? In my room on my bed.
- What potential distractions can you anticipate? My cell phone and others are loud in my building.
- How do you plan to avoid these distractions? Putting headphones in and listening to my music.
- What time of day is your best time to study, and why? Night for me so I can sleep with the information in my brain.
- What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? I really don’t have any i just try to read over any notes or work.
Mid-semester reflection : What classes are you doing well in, and why? English, sociology, chemistry, and health professions. The class I do really well in is English because the teacher is excellent. He explains things to me till I understand it. Most teachers do not like him. That’s why I do better in his class.
What classes did you identify as needing assistance in, on your Learning Styles Self Assessment. What changes have you made? Chemistry is the class I need a lot of assistance in. I try to watch YouTube videos so I can get a better understanding about the subject.
Transition to college What expectations did you have coming to college? To pass all my classes and just to succeed. Have those expectations come to fruition, or not? How? No because chemistry is a hard course for me.
In what way is your college experience different from what you expected? Yes because of Covid we don’t really be doing a lot of things others did.
What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester? That i really made friends or no one has came to me asking can we be friends.
If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome? Moving away from home not being with my parents and i really don’t have an easy challenge i overcame. OR If you commute to class: What is the toughest challenge with commuting to campus? Easiest challenge to overcome? Major Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester. That the science class you have to take are hard.
Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having. Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about? Yes they have change because of the courses i need to take and i don’t have anything else in mind Connecting to campus. Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation. Really i have trouble with my chemistry class and odu haves people that can help me Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you? Yes and helping me with my mental my friends Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved? Umm i wanted to join a dance group but i didn’t feel good about it
End-semester reflection: Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now. What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain. What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago? I have grown a lot from the beginning of the semester till now. How I have overcome a lot in this semester from being scared to open up to others to making friends in my classes. This semester did not meet my expectations at all. I thought I would be more focused and my motivation would be better but things just didn’t go that way. I wish I knew how to manage my time better. Study Habits How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester? How have your study habits changed? Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester. What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester? I really don’t consider what I do is studying but I spend 1-2hrs reviewing my notes for any class. No, my studying habits haven’t changed because I really don’t know how to study the right way. I will try to do touring even if I don’t need it and maybe talk to the teacher about anything even if I’m not struggling to help me understand better. Health Professions Learning Community This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White. On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together. This semester we provided events for you to hear from health professionals from ODU. Which event was most beneficial for you as a student, and why? They came together for me at soc and hlth 101. We had field trips and many activities dealing with both classes. Most of my work I could say I did that already in this class so they had some similarities. The paint night event even though we was painting this event help me feel better about myself and understanding more about the determinants of health.
