In this week’s Journal question we are talking about How cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance. You must first understand what deviance is and how it portrays cyber tech before a person can answer this question. Deviance can be defined as an action or behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule, as well as informal violations of social norms. This is a cyber aspect that can come in many forms, and is amplified by the ambiguity of the internet, as when you are anonymous as well as the other people a person is talking to it is harder for a normal person to empathize, making bullying more prevalent online. As cyber technology has advanced it has become even easier to bully online. In the early era of the internet, it was harder for companies to chat rooms and forums as storage used to be very expensive. But as storage has gone down in price websites that take more storage to run have started to appear like Facebook on Instagram. With websites like this where the users get validation from their friends and other followers on what they post, there is a strong link to mental health. So if a person decided to be an internet troll and make fun of someone they do not know it will negatively affect the person they are making fun of. This in turn becomes deviance due to the advancement of cyber technology in the twenty-first century. In conclusion, cyber tech has made a direct pathway for increased cases of cyber deviance.
