I completed the social media disorder scale. The findings were not shocking because I do not use social media too much. I only had one yes on the questions and that was related to using social media to procrastinate on homework. Regarding the other items on the scale, they are more extreme and does prove the existence of the social media disorder. Some of the items are related to depression like feeling dissatisfied/bad when not being able to use it or use it as an escape to mask negative feelings. I think the items are on point because many people use social media to complain and voice their issues to the public, so they can gain some sympathy or feel better about their self-esteem. When they do not have social media as their balance, they might do risky behaviors in the public or follow other naughty advice from their friends. The other items are related with relationship problems and trust. Some people get in a conflict with their family over the reliance on social media and some lie about their time that is spent on social media. This is concerning because social media is not supposed to divide or harm relationships, but nurture or sustain them. When social media has adverse effects, there should be efforts to limit the social media usage until the person focuses more on their relationships. These patterns are found in the world because social media has become almost like a drug. People may believe false information and relish the amount of entertainment pushed on social media. As they believe the information, they may distance themselves from others and feel uneasy when they forget to give a “like” on the post. This leads to the new research on the negative effects of social media.
