For this week’s article we read over

19/117-Cybersecurity/b/ on social cybersecurity. This article was very interesting to read
because it talks about how important it really is for military leaders to understand social security
is essential when defending national security. The article breaks down how “information warfare”
is now seen as a key strategy when trying to influence military, diplomatic and economic power
as a whole. Russia’s use of information warfare has a long history behind it that is mentioned.
With Russia using soviet propaganda to control minds and maintain power has now evolved into
leveraging disinformation and division. Two key changes in communication that cause social
cyberthreats are the decentralization of information and the need for physical influence on
society. Decentralization can be seen as social media prioritizes advertising and fake news
rather than putting out the truth. The need for physical influence manipulates the information
due to low cost and things like anonymity. In the past if you wanted to get your word out you had
to get out and speak to people face to face but now the internet allows for influencers to start
global conversation from anywhere. The main concern is that the future will be dominated by
psychological and information warfare. The hope is that policies will be developed to enhance
social cybersecurity.
