I am very interested in cybersecurity technology because ever since I was young, I have really enjoyed working and tinkering with technological devices. I really enjoy playing video games and in some ways, I have to work through some technical problems while playing. At Old Dominion University, I am actually going for a major in Communication studies and a minor in Cybersecurity. I feel as though working in the cybersecurity field would be very rewarding since you are protecting other individuals’ information. I also feel that it would be very rewarding to secure data and other information away from hackers. Right before the COVID pandemic, when I was a senior in high school I had the opportunity to have an internship at NOAA Wallops Island. Every day I was assigned to a new person to see around the facility and explore the different potential jobs or career paths. I was especially interested in the cybersecurity path and worked with the individuals for a number of days. They showed me how they did a number of things including setting up passwords as well as programming security cameras. They explained how to work in the field of cybersecurity you have to be curious and like to attack new challenges. They also explained how they really love their jobs because they have to work their minds every day. Since I have grown up living on Chincoteague Island in Virginia, I have always lived near NASA. I have heard that the number of cybersecurity jobs is only increasing since the number of cybercrime are always increasing. Because of this, my eventual dream job would be to work at either NASA or NOAA within the communication department but also may be able to chip in with my cybersecurity background. Hopefully, I will be able to achieve this goal in the future!
