Cybersecurity is the practice of defending or protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access. As many more companies and organizations such as banks head toward being more digital, cybersecurity measures should be at an all-time high. Cyber-related crimes have become more and more imminent and the severity of these crimes has gone up significantly. Many companies and countries can lose tremendous amounts of money. Many countries seem to be very prepared for these attacks while others are very far behind. According to the GCI index on the countries that are most committed to cybersecurity, the list includes 1. The United Kingdom, 2. The United States, 3. France, 4. Lithuania, 5. Estonia, 6. Singapore, 7. Spain, 8. Malaysia, 9. Norway, and 10. France. Many of these countries are faced with the same cybersecurity threats which include malware, password thief, phishing, and many other typical cybersecurity threats. However, in some situations, the United States has received different cybersecurity risks than other countries. An example of this would be a risk for presidential elections. In 2016, it is a proven fact that the United States presidential election was interfered with through cyberattacks. During the election the Russian government hacked into United States computers, taking essential documents to try to fix the election. However, even though this event occurred the United States’s readiness for cybercrime may be at an all-time high. From prior knowledge, I remembered that the United States government recently signed an Executive Order to help improve the nation’s cybersecurity and to protect federal government networks. This is a tremendous step forward to prioritize cybersecurity because the number of attacks as well as the severity will only continue to rise as technology continues to evolve and adapt. If the United States government, keeps cybersecurity near the top of their list, our country and our people will continue to flourish in this new age of technology.
