Originally I started off as an engineering major and I enjoyed it, but then I realized math wasn’t for me. I struggled for a little while trying to figure out what I would enjoy doing that isn’t engineering. When I found cybersecurity in degree works, I was reading up on the classes I would have to take and they seemed interesting. My brother does data systems in the Marine Corps so I asked him what he thought about cybersecurity and he said it was a better major than engineering because you can find more jobs and make more money. When I looked at career options I thought they were interesting and I could do something in communications systems or systems security. I think it is interesting being able to go into a computer and either break it from the inside or set up security, I find it fascinating to be able to break computers with a few lines of code or software. Something else I find cool about cybersecurity technology is how simple it can be to use and make. I’ve always been good with computers and I have always wanted to learn how to code and with cybersecurity I believe this will be a good starting point to achieve some of my personal goals. Two classes I am most looking forward to the most are the Linux and windows systems security classes because windows and Linux are everyday software that people use and it would be interesting to see the inner workings of it and to see how the security for windows compares to the security for Linux. I am also looking forward to IT 315 which is intro to networking and security as it will set a good foundational base for me to build a strong career on.
