There are some ethical issues involving other peoples electronic information. Many people don’t realize how big their electronic footprint is. With the rising use of technology to post about people’s lives there has also been a rise of ethical issues. Some of these issues include privacy concerns, data security, data accuracy, and data ownership.

The biggest ethical concern is privacy. Everyone wants their life to be private or at least most of it. With the rise in use of social media people’s lives are being more and more exposed. Many individuals will use this person’s information to make fake accounts in their image and name or try to use their identity for other uses, in cases of identity theft you can see that the thief will research a person’s life and try to find everything out about them in order to completely mimic them online. The next ethical concern is data security. Similar to privacy, data security is always at risk. Data can store private and sensitive information that may contain people’s birth certificates or social security numbers. When this information is stored securely it can be easy to steal someone’s data and become them or hold it hostage. Next is data accuracy, this ties in to the first two concerns, where if someone were to hack your instagram account for example; they could easily post something that you would never post or even say, which would lead to poor data accuracy. Lastly is data ownership, with data ownership people should be able to store their own data in a private manner but many people don’t realize in ToS agreements they allow companies to look at their data and sell it to 3rd parties.

Overall there are many ethical issues to storing data electronically, but with proper security people can keep their information safe online.
