Service Learning Reflection

I worked with two organizations. One being the GHR Center and the other being Student Support Services here at ODU. I worked with the GHR Center from 10:30 until 12:30 and I was a medical scribe and researcher. I basically wrote from one document to the next on things about the patient and they also needed me to research where they could find seminars and other informational events in order to further their knowledge on opioid addiction. The company had just started and they needed help because they were understaffed and so I helped in any way I could. Their purpose was to help people with opioid addiction to not only to cure the addiction, but to help them function in society. Their mission is to decrease the overwhelming amount of opioid addiction in Hampton Roads. Finally, their goal is to completely rid Hampton Roads of opioid addiction. They are staffed with doctors and a therapist. The doctors help t administer medicine to patients so they can cure them physically, while the therapist helps to cure them mentally by talking out the patient’s problems or past. I want to be a nurse because of the impact you can make in people’s lives and this institution is looking to do the same thing. I do not think my values or opinions changed. I feel that they have been strengthened. Working alongside the doctors was exciting. I got to see people who really care about what they do and that was encouraging. I had helped my great aunts Hospis worker with getting her in the shower and trying to help her with routine things that the Hospis worker wanted my great aunt to do. They both were motivational in pursuing a career in Nursing because I got to see first-hand the impact they make in people’s lives and that is one thing I feel like I needed to see in action to know whether or not I wanted to be a nurse. The degree that my service learning with GHR Center could relate to could be for a Masters in Science and Education. This relates to the CSAC (Certified Substance Abuse Counselor) there at GHR Center. I would choose to pursue that as a parallel major because it involves walking with people through their traumatic experiences or even just figuring out why they are where they are. The mind interest me a lot and it seems as if one would learn a lot about the mind in that field. For Student Support Services, I worked down the street from ODU from 9 until 12 and I walked the streets with a group and helped to pick up trash. The Student Support Services purpose is to help students to face the challenges that are thrown at them throughout their college years. Their mission is to try their hardest to help students succeed to the best of their (the students) abilities. Their goal is to raise the rate of success that comes from students at ODU. They provided tutoring and mentors of different types. Again, this organization helps people who are in need or people who think they will be in need. In nursing, there will be those who come in because they have an immediate need and there will be people who come in so that they need less in the future. I have changed one thing about my values after picking up trash throughout the streets. I walked through a park where they take the kids to play sometimes. As I was walking through it there was broken glass, used condoms, and beer bottles everywhere. I value cleaning up the streets a lot more than I did before this service learning experience. Without those monthly clean ups kids are more in danger of getting hurt or contracting some nasty disease. Another health-related service that I have done would be taking care of sick dogs at a shelter when I was little. These two experiences helped my desire to not only be a nurse but to be a pediatric nurse. Both dogs and children can only help themselves so much and I decided that kids would be the most satisfying option if I were to become any type of nurse. A public administration degree would be related to this type of work. I would not really be too interested in getting a degree like that because it seems as if you are not on the front line of this type of work. I would like to see the impact it makes on people.
