SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

In this course I used the VHL website and the textbook. During the semester, I actively asked questions to many of members of my Hispanic family to better my conversional skills and overall understanding of the Spanish language. These practices helped better my understanding of the Hispanic culture. The culture videos that were assigned as homework were extremely helpful to understand the values of the Hispanic culture.

Engaging in Communities

During this semester, I did not engage in the community because of the COVID-19 guidelines that are currently in place. In the future I hope to participate in community events at Old Dominion University.

Interpersonal Communication

During this course I completed several interviews with classmates and with professor Roy. In addition, I completed several written assignments that furthered my understanding of the Spanish language. Outside of class, I spoke with many of my Hispanic family members regularly to continue to grow in my understanding and speaking abilities of the Spanish language.

Presentational Speaking

This semester, I completed several interviews with my class mates and with my professor. The first interview with professor Roy was about my family. the second interview with my classmate was about things that I enjoy doing or my opinions on certain subjects. The third interview with professor Roy was about my general understanding of the class; it included things like introduction, questions about my school and my major, and questions about my family.

The most challenging thing for me about the Spanish langue is hearing words and then being able to understand them quickly. Reading and writing are my areas of strength but listening is my area of weakness. In order to overcome this weakness, I actively engaged with the Hispanic members of my family.

Presentational Writing

In this course, there were three written activities. The first composition was about my school and where I live. The second composition was about my family. The third composition was a prompt asking me to describe my family.

Interpretive Listening

In this course there were several different activities that required me to listen to spoken Spanish. For each chapter, there was a culture video assigned. All three of the interviews required listening to Spanish. In addition, there were several listening homework’s for each chapter. listening and understanding Spanish is the more difficult part of learning Spanish. To overcome this challenge, I spent a lot of time speaking and listening to Spanish with the Hispanic members of my family so that I could practice and become a better Spanish listener.

Interpretive Reading

During this course, there were several written activities for each chapter. These include reading articles in Spanish and then answering questions about them in Spanish. Reading Spanish is easy for me to do. Unlike English, what is written is what is also spoken.
