Cybersecurity Internship
This course allows students to volunteer to work in an agency related to cybersecurity. Students must volunteer for 50 hours per course credit and complete course assignments.
Internship Title: Navy ROTC Midshipman Instructor Internship
Duration: 06/04/2023 – 06/26/2023
Organization: Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, IL
Description: During this internship, I had the privilege of serving as a Midshipman Instructor at RTC Great Lakes, a pivotal training facility for aspiring naval officers. As a Cybersecurity major at Old Dominion University and a Navy ROTC Midshipman, I took on the responsibility of mentoring and guiding Midshipman Candidates through their intensive training program. My role included fostering discipline, teamwork, and effective communication while also delivering a critical Operational Security (OPSEC) briefing. The internship provided practical insights into the application of cybersecurity principles and allowed me to witness firsthand the growth and transformation of future naval officers. This experience further solidified my commitment to a career in the military and enhanced my leadership and communication skills.

Applying Course Knowledge
Throughout my coursework in Cybersecurity at Old Dominion University, I have gained a strong foundation in various concepts and principles that directly relate to the world of work in the field of cybersecurity and my future career as a Cryptologic Warfare Officer in the Navy. Some of the key learnings and their practical applications include:
- Operational Security (OPSEC): The study of OPSEC has provided insights into identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities that could be exploited by adversaries. This knowledge is invaluable in safeguarding sensitive military operations, preventing leaks of classified information, and maintaining a high level of security in communications.
- Risk Management: Understanding risk assessment, threat modeling, and risk mitigation strategies has prepared me to assess potential cybersecurity risks and make informed decisions to minimize vulnerabilities. This is crucial in ensuring the security and resilience of military systems and operations.
- Leadership and Communication Skills: While not directly cybersecurity-related, courses in leadership and communication have enhanced my ability to work effectively in teams, provide clear instructions, and convey complex technical information to non-technical audiences. These skills are essential for mentoring, guiding, and collaborating with Midshipman Candidates and future team members.
In my career as a Cryptologic Warfare Officer, many of these concepts will be applied to ensure the security and integrity of military communications, intelligence operations, and data systems. Theories such as the Defense in Depth strategy, where multiple layers of security are implemented to protect critical assets, will be integral in designing and maintaining secure military networks. Additionally, the application of threat intelligence and continuous monitoring aligns with the concepts of proactive threat detection and incident response, which are essential in identifying and mitigating potential cyber threats.
Skill Development
During my role as a Midshipman Instructor at RTC Great Lakes, I had the opportunity to develop and refine a range of new skills that are not only essential in a military training environment but also applicable to various professional settings. Some of the new skills I acquired include:
- Effective Time Management: Balancing multiple responsibilities and tasks simultaneously, such as overseeing Midshipman Candidates’ well-being, conducting training sessions, and ensuring compliance with military protocols, required effective time management. I learned to prioritize tasks, allocate time efficiently, and adapt to rapidly changing situations while maintaining focus and organization.
- Leadership and Mentorship: As a Midshipman Instructor, I was entrusted with guiding and mentoring Midshipman Candidates through their training program. This role allowed me to develop strong leadership skills, including leading by example, providing clear instructions, and offering guidance and support to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Communication and Public Speaking: Delivering Operational Security (OPSEC) briefings required me to effectively convey complex concepts to Midshipman Candidates. This experience improved my public speaking skills and helped me articulate technical information in a clear and concise manner, ensuring understanding among my audience.
Attached is my OPSEC brief.
Personal Development
Personally, my experience as a Midshipman Instructor during the Navy ROTC internship at RTC Great Lakes brought about significant personal growth and valuable insights that extend beyond the classroom and textbooks. Here are some ways in which I benefited personally from the internship experience:
- Resilience Under Pressure: Operating within a structured military training environment exposed me to high-pressure situations. I developed resilience, adaptability, and the ability to remain composed and make informed decisions during challenging circumstances.
- Conflict Resolution and Diplomacy: Addressing conflicts among Midshipman Candidates required me to employ effective conflict resolution techniques and maintain a diplomatic approach. This experience improved my interpersonal skills and ability to foster a positive work environment.
- Observation of Leadership Styles: Observing supervisors and colleagues provided me with a firsthand understanding of different leadership styles. I identified examples of leadership that promoted collaboration, communication, and trust, as well as instances where leadership hindered productivity.
