SPAN 102

Jonee Grant

An Effective Reflection Is

compering my speaking and comprehension growth in Spanish is humbling. When I start span102 I had a basic understanding of Spanish, and I could hardly string a sentence along. Now I feel more confident in my speaking, and I comprehend more Spanish that when I last took the course in spring of 2022. I have not made any strides in the right direction when it comes to my writing In Spanish. Conjugating and spell in Spanish is still very difficult for me.

Artifacts

Here are some of the writing props from the Class. I struggle with forming sentences. i do feel as though i have had some progress.

Instructions

Exploring Culture

Flash cards have been my best friend when it comes to memorization of words and phrases in Spanish. I Make a set of Flash cards for each section of vocabulary words. I believe that if i had someone to practice Spanish with one on one that i would pick it up faster.

I don’t feel as though I’ve learned anything new about the Hispanic culture from this session. I have always had respect for people who are bilingual or multilingual no matter what the languages are. Learning another language takes time and training your brain to think the way the people of that culture do.  Being a child of and immigrant myself I have been lucky enough to grow up in two parts of the world, so my world view has always been challenged.

Engaging in Communities

Spanish is a widely spoken language. I believe that it should be mandatory in all levels of school. it would help us all be better citizens of the world. Language is an unnecessary barrier. It divides us culturally but once we open up to the idea of learning about a new culture and their language, we see that we have so much in common.

Interpersonal Communication

Talk aboard is a unique approach at helping a non-Spanish speaker( I’m sure they have it for other languages) to have a conversation with someone in a Spanish speaking country. One can get a bit nervous meeting new people who speak a language you are new to; however it is exciting to know you are calling halfway around the world in some cases. We get a glimpse into that other person’s day to day life and hear just how different Spanish can sound depending on the country and region.

if i could do these again i would want the time limit on the conversations to be longer. It takes times to warm up and to get the Spanish to flow. The brain needs time to switch.

Presentational Speaking

For Presentational speaking I presented my favorite dish in Spanish. Salt fish and dumplings. The challenge with this was using the right phrases for things such as “stir the pot” and adding measurements and directions. It was fun and I enjoyed doing it over and over again until I got it right. When looking at the video I see that my problem is with confidence speaking the language. I get caught up in wanting to sound like a Spanish speaker rather than sounding like myself with my Caribbean accent speaking Spanish.

Presentational Writing

i have not mastered the idea of formal commands and irregular verbs. Writing in Spanish is not my strong point. i will post the writing i memorized for my favorite meal. This was hard, getting the tense correct and giving directions are formal commands.

Interpretive Listening

i tried to watch some of my favorite movies and shows in Spanish earlier on in the class and i felt completely lost. Now at the end of the course i have watched the film Roma in Spanish with English subtitles, but i didn’t need them much. I started to understand the context and how different words sound. my ears and my brain were almost in sync.

Interpretive Reading

here i will post my poyecto 10. its shot in pieces because i am as usual having to breastfeed and do homework. this semester was tough. this is the first semester where i am a mom and working and doing school full time. There just aren’t enough hours in my day to be great at everything. i prioritize time with my daughter over everything. shes two years old and speaks more Spanish than i do because she watches Spanish cartoons. i need to take lessons with her.
