Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Address the reflection exercises in each of the following sections. For each section, you will need to embed portions of these assignments and activities as artifacts to substantiate your reflection. Then, at the end of each section, include a link to the document or embed it as a PDF.
Tutorials are available:
- Embedding a PDF
- Embedding Media (Images, Audio)
- Embedding a Video
An Effective Reflection Is
- Written in English.
- A demonstration, explanation, comparison of skill and growth described through what you learned and the challenges you had in that learning while highlighting your best work.
- A discussion of how you overcame any weakness or obstacles. Explain what you mean.
- Supported by evidence as represented by your artifacts (course materials, photographs, video, conversations, projects, news reports, authentic materials, etc.).
- Specific, addressing particular strengths, weakness, skills, transformative experiences, etc., avoiding vague generalizations (ex: “I learned a lot.”).
An Effective Reflection is not
- Only sharing an artifact without context or discussion.
- Only a description or explanation of an artifact. Focus on your learning and growth as a result of having completed that experience.
- An attempt to justify your work to an instructor. Instead, think more broadly about future audiences that might benefit from seeing evidence of your work and the skills you are developing.
Artifacts
A good artifact is a portion or clip of an assignment. It needs to be carefully selected to provide evidence/proof that supports what you are saying in your reflection.
Your reflection will help you determine what that will be. It is a quest for quality. It will represent you academically and professionally, and have personal meaning. It can be written, audio, or video.
At the end, ask yourself if the artifacts best demonstrates your abilities and growth over time.
At the end of your reflection in each section, link or embed the assignment/artifact. If the assignment has multiple pages and seems to overwhelm the section, consider adding just the first page and offering to provide the rest upon request.

Exploring Culture
Using Lingrolearning helped me learn and understand more about Spanish cultural. There are a variety of videos and activities to do that can help you get a better understanding of the language and also its culture. It was better to take notes from this site and review them to help you prepare for tests, quizzes, or even projects for your class.
Lingrolearning helped me with understanding more about Hispanic culture by doing activities and watching videos to help you review the material that you learned. These challenged my worldview by making sure that I keep up with the course and plan out which assignments I need to complete. Making sure that I keep up with the material and reviewing the material were the two challenges were where the perspectives were revealed to me.
Engaging in Communities
It is important to engage with your community because people around you can help you with whatever it is you could be stuck on and give you good advice on anything. The value of engaging with your community is you can meet new people and have a connection with them.
My experience with engaging with my community is from my Spanish class at ODU and with family. I have a classmate, who is also now a good friend of mine, where we would ask each other questions about the assignments given to us and how we can help each other on them. From my family, I have relatives who are Hispanic or are familiar with Hispanic culture I can ask about any type of question involving Hispanic culture or the language.
Interpersonal Communication
An example of oral and audio activities would have to be in Lingrolearning. There are activities where you can record yourself speaking Spanish into the microphone of your computer or any other electronic device to an ai that is speaking Spanish back to you.
In discussion board posts, my classmates are able to respond to your posts. Whether it’s a video of you speaking Spanish or a profile update, they are able to respond to your post in Spanish and you are also able to respond back in the same language. The one thing that was difficult was trying to make sure you conjugate your words properly in a conversation. I overcame that by studying and making sure which conjugation is used.
Presentational Speaking
A presentational speaking activity I’ve completed this semester would be working with a partner in class on making up a conversation in Spanish and then presenting that same conversation to our professor.
Besides working with a partner in the classroom, I have also worked with another classmate for a project we had to do for class. We had to record a video of ourselves together asking each other of our semester at ODU and also introducing one another. It was a great experience to have to actually work with someone on Spanish in person.
Presentational Writing
In class on Lingrolearning, we would prepare ourselves to make a video or a short passage in Spanish on a certain topic, such as describing how your school is. We would also work with a partner in class with conversar activities which we would later present to the class together.
With each assignment, I’ve learned to communicate more with others in Spanish, but it can be tricky sometimes to remember everything. To overcome this problem, I would look back into the material we’ve learned.
Interpretive Listening
In Lingrolearning, there are videos of people speaking Spanish and as they do so you can see in their attitude by what they mean. Whether they’re upset or happy about something. They would also use expressions and gestures to point something out to help the viewer understand.
Then, write a short reflection paragraph that includes the different things you listened to/heard this semester inside and outside of class or in the Language Learning Center or its website. Find a recording and add to this section; be sure to cite it. What was unclear or challenging for you? How did you overcome this difficulty? What did you find most interesting or compelling? What was your takeaway from the listening experience? How have you grown with each activity?
An example would have to be at my workplace. There was a customer who did not understand English so I used what I learned in Spanish class to help him out. He understood me, but also helped pronounce my words better to give me a better understanding. It was not really challenging for me since the interaction was short. I found it most interesting that I was able to communicate with someone who spoke only Spanish.
Interpretive Reading
In English, give a very brief 2-3 line description of interpretive communication activities you read in and out of class this semester, such as articles, stories, websites like the Language Learning Center, etc. that you completed for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a copy of one of these activities; remember to cite it. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).
In class, we would read over a short passage in Spanish. We would go over the assignments as well and speak in Spanish out loud in the classroom. We’ve also done one oral exam so far and have yet to do another soon.
Then, write a short reflection paragraph that includes the activities you described above. What was unclear or challenging for you? How did you overcome this difficulty? What did you find most interesting or compelling? What was your takeaway from the reading? How have you grown with each assignment?
It was clear and also challenging at the same time. I would sometimes forget the correct saying or conjugation to put in. I find it interesting because it is a very useful way to remember how to speak out loud in Spanish. My takeaway from it is to make sure you pronounce your words right. I have grown with each assignment by making sure I do not make the same mistakes again.
