SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Reflection:

After I finished Spanish 101, I felt a bit more confident coming into Spanish 102. I now know more than just the basics. By that I mean I know how to ask where someone is from and what their family is like as well. Since completing the class besides gaining confidence, I have also gained an understanding of how difficult it is to understand and speak another language with the correct pronunciation. I continue to use Duolingo for learning the language which adds to my confidence levels and then there is Lingro which has always been helpful from day one of learning another language. As I continue to learn Spanish, I hope to always feel confident and comfortable speaking. Some things that I hope to learn in the future are how to keep a conversation going as well as how to ask the more important questions.

Artifacts:

Exploring Culture:

When learning about different cultures and countries that speak different languages, like Spanish. There were quite a few things that helped me see certain cultures from another point of view. Like certain YouTube videos that we had to give a response to in English and Spanish. For example, I had to complete an assignment on family dynamic and how close am I with my family compared to those who live in a foreign country. Below, you will see a website link and my answer to the discussion board.

Engaging in Communities:

Engaging in the communities is something that I would like to do more of to help out others who need it. This year I did do a bit of that, some things I did were help about some of my neighbors with their children who speak a bit of Spanish and also working with younger children who need extra help in school.

Interpersonal Communication:

Some examples of interpersonal communication that I have participated in this semester are doing a Zoom call to introduce myself at the being of the semester and Talkabroad. Which is talking to someone else who speaks Spanish in another country. Some other activities that I did speaking Spanish with someone was practicing for certain assignments. As well at writing in Spanish to answer questions on quizzes and assignments.

Presentational Speaking:

Presentational speaking is something that I have always been confident in but when I got to learning Spanish a bit more that changed. I was more nervous and anxious speaking Spanish to anyone. I hope to continue to grow on that and become more confident with speaking as well as what I am saying. Most of the presentational speaking that I did was also on Lingro when answering questions that require speaking for it to be an answer.

Presentational Writing:

Presentational writing to me is sometimes harder than speaking. I think this because Spanish in particular has many accents and rights and wrongs with these accents as well as using the correct form for a word if it is plural or not. I have learned a bit more about it this semester and how to look out for certain clues to make the sentence or words plural or not and when to conjugate them.

Interpretive Listening:

Interpretive listening is one of those things that I feel quite confident on. The reason being is because with this semester there was a lot more of that in our assignments. I listen out for certain ways the word is said as well as the emotion and emphasis that comes with saying the word. It is still quite imitating to me most of the time, but this is one of the things I am more comfortable with.

Interpretive Reading:

When it comes to reading it is something that I thought I would be quite good at, but I realize that reading another language is just as hard as speaking it. With time I think I would be able to improve with this seeing as how important it is to read as it is to write in Spanish. Overall, learning a new language even if it is my second class taking it can be hard and challenging, but challenges are what make it more fun and worth learning.
