There are a number of benefits and disadvantages to involving law enforcement to address cybersecurity incidents. There is a benefit to risk analysis that should be performed by the organization when considering this action. If the law enforcement involvement will compromise the integrity or structure of the business itself, it does not behoove the organization to do so. In addition, once law enforcement is involved, the organization itself holds little to no control over how the incident is managed, for better or worse. However, if law enforcement is involved, they are generally better equipped to handle cybersecurity incidents by way of having the resources and expertise to address the incident accordingly. They can also act as an unbiased party, ensuring all facets of the incident are addressed adequately without prejudice.
