Internet of Things (IoT) Security Challenges

In my opinion, one of the largest IoT security risks is the ever increasing interconnectivity of devices. As devices become further connected, the potential for exploits, bugs, and backdoors increases exponentially, and the impact these attacks have only increase. From the article “7 Risks Associated with Increased Connectivity” by Madison Miner, she states ” Attackers may leverage APIs to access a business’s IoT devices, compromising the router, web interface, server, and other network components.” The more devices we depend on that are interconnected, the more we increase our vulnerability in the event of an attack. In addition, these devices are meant to be autonomous. This typically results in minimal monitoring and as a result, increased vulnerability. Madison corroborates this statement by stating “These devices may be left unattended in isolated regions for weeks or months at a time. They are vulnerable to theft and bodily harm because of their seclusion.” As of 2021, more than 10 billion IoT devices are in use. It is clear that although undeniably useful, our increased dependence on the IoT necessitates increased monitoring, as well as remaining cognizant of our dependence on these devices in the event of an attack or outage.
