Before taking this course, I mostly thought about cybersecurity from a technical point of view, such as protecting computers, networks, and personal information. This class helped me understand that cybersecurity goes beyond technology. It also involves laws, ethics, politics, business decisions, and the way people use technology in their daily lives.

Some of the topics we covered included cybercrime, privacy, cybersecurity policies, artificial intelligence, and the effects of cyberattacks on individuals and organizations. Through research papers, reflection assignments, journals, quizzes, and other coursework, I was able to look at these topics from different perspectives. These assignments helped me better understand how technology can be used for good purposes but can also create opportunities for crime, privacy issues, and other security concerns.

Reflection Essay and Course Learning

One of the important parts of this course was reflecting on the relationship between technology and cybersecurity. The assignments helped me think more about how cybersecurity affects people outside of the technical side of things. For example, security measures can help protect personal information, but they can also raise concerns about privacy and how much information organizations should be allowed to collect or monitor.

The course also helped me understand that there is not always one simple answer to a cybersecurity problem. A decision that improves security for a business or government could also affect the privacy or rights of individuals. Learning about these situations helped me understand why cybersecurity professionals need to consider more than just whether a system is secure. They also need to think about how their decisions affect other people.

Artifact 1: Ethical Implications of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework

One artifact that demonstrates my learning in this course is my NIST Cybersecurity Framework Policy Analysis, which included looking at the ethical implications of cybersecurity policies. In this assignment, I explored how the NIST Cybersecurity Framework can help organizations manage risks and protect their systems and information. I also considered the costs and benefits of implementing security measures and how they can affect individual privacy and rights.

This assignment helped me understand that cybersecurity policies are important, but they can also create ethical questions. For example, monitoring systems can help organizations detect suspicious activity, but too much monitoring can affect employee privacy. Organizations also have to consider the cost of implementing security measures and whether smaller businesses have the same resources as larger organizations.

This artifact connects to the course outcomes involving ethical dilemmas, the costs and benefits of secure technology, and the role cybersecurity plays in society. It helped me understand that cybersecurity decisions should balance protecting information with respecting people’s rights.

Artifact 2: Deepfake AI Research Project

Another artifact that demonstrates my learning is my Deepfake AI Research Project. In this project, I researched deepfake technology and how it can be used to create realistic fake images, videos, and audio. I looked at how this technology can contribute to misinformation, political manipulation, fraud, and identity theft.

This project helped me understand how new technology can create opportunities for criminal behavior. Someone could use a fake voice to impersonate another person, attempt to scam a victim, or spread false information online. These situations show how technology can make certain crimes easier to carry out and harder for people to recognize.

The project also connected to the cultural and political sides of cybersecurity because deepfakes can influence public opinion and affect how people trust information they see online. It helped me realize that technology users need to be careful about what they believe and share. This artifact connects to the course outcomes involving cybercrime, victimization, and the relationship between technology and society.

Artifact 3: Darknet Diaries – Stuxnet

My work on the Darknet Diaries episode about Stuxnet was another way I learned about the real-world effects of cybersecurity. The episode explained how malware could be used to target industrial systems and affect physical equipment, rather than only computers or information stored online.

This assignment helped me understand that cyberattacks can have consequences beyond the internet. When technology is connected to important infrastructure, an attack can affect organizations, governments, and potentially the safety of people. Stuxnet also showed how cybersecurity can become connected to international politics and conflicts between countries.

This artifact connects to the course outcomes involving the global nature of cybersecurity, criminal behavior, and the way technology can affect nations and societies. It helped me see that cybersecurity is not just an individual or business concern. It can also be part of larger political and international issues.

Artifact 4: Darknet Diaries – WannaCry

Another artifact from this course is my work on the Darknet Diaries episode about the WannaCry ransomware attack. This assignment covered how ransomware spread, the importance of backups, and the effects of the attack on organizations such as the UK’s National Health Service. We also discussed technical topics like EternalBlue, DNS, DHCP, and how Marcus Hutchins discovered a way to help stop the malware from spreading.

This assignment showed me how a cyberattack can disrupt important services and affect people who depend on them. In the case of the NHS, the attack created problems for healthcare services, showing that cybersecurity failures can have consequences for people’s everyday lives.

It also helped me understand why organizations need to prepare for cyberattacks instead of waiting until something happens. Backups, recovery plans, and secure systems can make a major difference when an organization is dealing with an attack. This artifact connects to the course outcomes involving cybercrime, victimization, the components of cyber systems, and the benefits of producing secure technology.

Artifact 5: Weekly Technology and Cybersecurity Journals

My weekly technology and cybersecurity journals also helped me connect what I was learning in class to real-world technology and security issues. These activities gave me opportunities to think about how technology affects people and how cybersecurity problems can develop as technology changes.

Through these reflections, I could consider issues such as privacy, cybercrime, new technology, and the responsibilities that come with using digital systems. They also helped me look beyond the technical details and think about the social, legal, and ethical questions connected to cybersecurity.

These journals connect to several course outcomes because they encouraged me to think about cybersecurity from different perspectives. They helped me recognize that technology can create progress and new opportunities, but it can also introduce risks that individuals, organizations, and governments need to address.

What I Learned from CYSE 200T

Overall, CYSE 200T helped me develop a better understanding of how cybersecurity affects different parts of society. The biggest thing I took away from this course is that cybersecurity is about more than protecting computers and networks. It also involves protecting people, making responsible decisions, understanding laws and policies, and thinking about the consequences of new technology.

The assignments on deepfake AI and cyberattacks helped me understand how technology can be misused and how real people can be affected. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework assignment helped me think about the ethical side of security and the balance between protecting information and respecting privacy. The Stuxnet and WannaCry assignments showed me how cyberattacks can affect businesses, healthcare, governments, and even international relations.

I also learned that cybersecurity is constantly changing as new technologies are developed. This means that security professionals need to keep learning and be willing to adapt. Understanding the technical side is important, but it is just as important to understand the people and organizations affected by cybersecurity decisions.

Applying What I Learned in the Future

As I work toward finishing my degree and starting a career in cybersecurity, I can use what I learned in CYSE 200T to look at security problems from a wider perspective. I am interested in government cybersecurity work and remote opportunities, and I know that both can involve working with sensitive information, following policies, and making decisions that affect other people.

This course helped me understand why cybersecurity professionals need to consider the legal, ethical, political, and social sides of their work. Whether I end up working in cybersecurity, digital forensics, or another technology-related position, I want to be able to recognize risks while also understanding the impact security decisions can have on individuals and organizations.

Looking back at my work in this course, I can see how the different assignments helped me build a stronger foundation for my future. I still have more to learn, but CYSE 200T helped me understand the bigger picture of cybersecurity and why it matters in today’s world.

CYSE 200T: Technology and Cybersecurity Introduction Throughout CYSE 200T, I learned more about how technology and cybersecurity connect to everyday life and how they affect people, businesses, and governments.
