I chose to major in cyber security. This directly ties in with cyber security technology hence the reason I was interested in taking this class. In the future, as I will get more familiar and in-depth with my major, cyber security technology will become increasingly relevant and directly tied into what I’m learning. There are other majors besides cyber security that are related to cybersecurity technology. Four majors like this offered by Old Dominion University include computer science, computer engineering, information technology, and cyber operations. Each of these four majors offered by ODU deals with or is related to the cybersecurity field. Computer science requires deep knowledge and understanding of computers and their networks. Learning aspects of cybersecurity would definitely benefit their comprehension of the computer science field. Computer engineering is also very related because it deals with the hardware and software components of computers which are essential to the development of cybersecurity elements and functions. Computer engineering also incorporates the knowledge of electrical engineering and computer science to help understand the multiple components of cyberspace and networking. Information technology is another major field dealing with cybersecurity because they learn how to create, process, and store all kinds of electronic data and information. This is directly related to cyberspace and computer processes that are adjacent to the cybersecurity world. Finally, Cyber operations is an alternative major to cybersecurity at odu. Cyber operations mainly deal with the functions in relation to operational and system levels. It specializes in a particular division of cybersecurity which puts an emphasis on system attack, infiltration, exploitation, defense, mitigation, and recovery. This major has a clear connection to cybersecurity technology because it directly works with and utilizes these fundamentals. This shows how studying cybersecurity can be very beneficial to a number of different majors, especially in the computer/tech field.
