Computers have had a monumental effect on the world. In our modern society, we are constantly surrounded by computers, and almost everything is run on a computer. Anything from important databases to the internet is all run on computers and pretty much everyone uses them daily. Computers are defined as “an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program”. The term “computer” is very broad that entails many different electronic systems such as laptops, PCs, SCADA systems, security systems, etc. They provide safety and protection in many different forms which have overall contributed to the safety of our world. Three ways they have made the world safer are by communication, secured databases, and cybersecurity. Computers and the internet have given us the ability to communicate with another party across the globe in an instant. This has definitely contributed to our safety as we have the power to be in contact instantly with one another at any given time. Before computers, this form of communication was a lot less prevalent which hindered the safety of the world. The emergence of secured online databases has also increased our world’s safety. They allow people to store their data and private information in a secured non-physical place free from any unauthorized individuals. Cybersecurity has been the backbone of our safety in cyberspace. Since our world is run on computers, almost all information is stored on systems or online databases and cybersecurity has provided the security measures needed. Although computers have contributed a lot to our safety, they have also made it less safe in some ways. Since our world is run almost entirely online, people can use computers to gain unauthorized access to many important systems, databases, and networks which can be very dangerous. This is one of the most prominent ways that computers have decreased our world’s safety. This common issue is why we have individuals who constantly work to improve the safety of our cyber networks such as engineers. Engineers significantly contribute to making our networks safer by designing them to prevent anyone or anything from gaining unauthorized access. Essentially they create the blueprints of our networks and constantly develop new methods to improve safety in this area.
