My First Job
Towards the end of my freshman year of highschool, my parents told me that I would have to get a job over the summer. When I initially heard this news, I was pretty mad because I had no plans of doing such a thing. Nevertheless though, as the school year came to a close, I quickly switched my focus from working on my academic studies to going on the job hunt. This process was surprisingly challenging and ended up taking me almost more than double the time that I assumed it would take. Thinking back on it, I feel like I should have known that for the most part I was not what most employers are looking for. For almost all of the jobs that I ended up applying for Immediately got shot down. This stemming from both my lack of work experience and my inadequate interview skills. The process was grueling but after about a month I got hired at Manchester Bagels, a breakfast restaurant near my house. For the next two and a half months I worked four days a week or five hours a day. Obviously this is not that many hours per week. At that time though, those five hours often felt as if they lasted forever. It was just endless work in my mind. I have a hard time explaining what my actual job title was. This is because of the fact that I never actually had one. I was just referred to as an employee and that was it. The actual tasks that I had to do on the job ranged from taking orders to cooking the food to cleaning the lobby. Basically I was expected to be able to help with any of the main positions we had. Even though it consistently felt like an eternity there, the work that I had to do was not actually that challenging. Because of this I can say that I enjoyed my first job.
