The concept that life exists after death has existed for as long as humans have. The more you think about it, the more you realize how little sense it makes. The strangeness comes from the lack of communication available in the past. Because of the lack of modern day technology, for most of history it was virtually impossible for a civilization to spread its ideals across the world. This combined with the fact that most of the great civilizations have not existed at exactly the same time. With these conditions in place the introduction of religious beliefs to foreign people was rare. Because of this one would assume that the growth of religious beliefs would be halted. Instead, this lack of an introduction did not seem to have any impact. For some reason, it is human nature to always come up with the idea of religion and the afterlife. The details that distinguish each set of beliefs from each other are the outcomes of the different paths that each religion takes. These paths being heavily influenced by the conditions of the people living at the time in that place. Even in today’s society, a time when science is discovering the truth, most people still cling to their religion and their hope of life after death. I have thought about why the need for religion is so prevalent a lot. My conclusion is that it is basically a coping mechanism. When someone is religious and has a belief of life after death, it gives them to ability to dodge the big question that many people struggle their whole lives trying to figure out. This question being the why, why do we exist, what is the point of our life? The reason why humans instinctively turn to religious beliefs is because it is the only way to answer the question. With our lack of ability to actually prove why we exist, the only way to we can satisfy ourselves is by coming up with our own answers.
