Cyber technology allows for new avenues by which criminals can antagonize victims. As technology evolves, criminal activities evolve concurrently, offering new methods by which offenders can exploit civilians or do them harm. Fraud, cyberbullying, disturbing the peace, blackmail, ransom, etc. All have flourished as a result of technological advancement. Now, a criminal can undermine the criminal justice system and antagonize or assault an unsuspecting person on the web and maintain their anonymity while doing so. Dependent on the state of which the offense is taking place, the ability to prosecute the offender (should they be caught) becomes very improbable and in some cases impossible. Technology becomes a tool by which offenders can exploit the innocent.

Unfortunately, one very common avenue of harassment comes in the form of cyber stalking. This occurs when an offender utilizes the internet to stalk and harass a victim via social media sites or other forms of digital communication. The ability to prosecute this kind of behavior becomes legally murky dependent on the language and circumstance in which these events happen. And the psychological toll on victims is weighed in as they are constantly harassed by an unknown person or group. It can become very exhausting and terrifying for those who are unfortunate enough to experience it. And one absolutely heinous crime is when online stalkers prey on minors and children. As children of younger ages receive access to the internet, the likeliness that they have been briefed on the necessary safety concerns becomes improbable. Making them vulnerable to stalkers who wish to exploit a child as a medium to get to a parent’s finances (via credit card) or worse, attempts to lure them into a situation to be kidnapped or sexually assaulted. The depravity of criminals knows no bounds and no exception can be made for criminals who operate online.
