SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

I was able to learn a lot about Spanish Culture through the video clips that were in our assignments. They allowed us to actually see what actually goes on and see the people celebrating their culture. They showed how easy it is to talk and meet random people in the streets because the people there are extremely friendly. They also showed us what goes on during a rivarly soccer match between Barcelona and Madrid and how everything just stops for these amazing soccer matches. These clips also allowed us to have a better understanding of what to say when we are discussing what classes we are taking or when we are talking to a relative.

Interpersonal Communication

A few things we learned this semester include being able to tell time and learning how to say each family member in Spanish. We were also able to learn how to say the course we take and places we might like to go.

These activities I feel are where I am best at because telling time is really easy to do now. It was one of the easiest lesson to learn and remember. I might forget what the Spanish term for some family members are but for the most part I remember the majority. I just kept practicing when the assignments we had to do at home to help me understand.

Presentational Speaking

This semester we have doing oral interviews to let our professor know that we understand and engage in conversation in Spanish. For the most part we have practiced and done oral interviews with another classmate being our partner.

Throughout this semester I have been partnered up with Polo for when we do our oral interviews. I think my biggest challenge pronouncing some of the words right because they are just hard for me, since I am not that much of a Spanish speaker. Some words are able to flow with ease but others be having me become tongue tied. I understand half the things we be talking about in the oral interviews because I learned that I’m better at seeing what the words are despite hearing them.

Presentational Writing

This semester we had to write two compositions. The first was dealing with us describing our families and the second composition was us explain what a student could do for fun while on campus.

Writing the composition was a little tricky in the beginning but I was able to adjust to everything once I was able to know to figure out what I wanted to say in my writings. I think I excelled at being able to understand my compositions and telling when and where I made mistakes from time to time. Also, I think if I practice writing more compositions I will be able to write them with ease I believe.

Interpretive Listening

In the Aventura, there were multiple assignments that required us to listen to the speaker and interpret what they were saying. Whether it was a word we needed to hear or to tell if their statement was true/false.

I believe what was challenging for me is that I couldn’t always understand what they were trying to say because they were speaking so fast for some of them. Also, I would get confused and think they said something else, when they didn’t. In order to make sure I could get what they were saying I would constantly play the recording over and over again until it was clear to me. This activity allowed me to better understand how to say certain words and how an actual conversation between two Spanish speakers would be like.

Interpretive Reading

Spanish-Crossword-Puzzle

In some the activities we had to do tasks like crossword puzzles and reading short text to answer our questions. The main thing we had to do to help us answer the questions was to be able to read between the lines.

I really have that much of a challenge when it comes to crosswords puzzles, though the reading the passages for the text were sometimes a struggle since it was in a different language and all. I was able to still understand the text to a point to allow me to find the information I needed to answer my questions.
